Good stocking stuffers are small, quick to open and labeled for the kid who finds them. Every pick here sits in our lowest price tier at our last check, has a starting age of 3 to 8 on its listing, and comes from a different brand. I sorted them by kind of play and by starting age. (Our stockings hang from cup hooks under the mantel. Dana counted them once: four hooks, five stockings. Nobody has explained the fifth.)

How this list is builtSmall items in our lowest price tier at our last check, with a stated starting age between 3 and 14. One pick per brand. Card games, mini sets, blind boxes and pocket-size kits; anything with small parts or magnets carries its warning.

The rule is short. Every pick sat in our lowest price tier when we last checked its listing. Every pick has a stated starting age between 3 and 14 on its listing, and on this list the starting ages run from 3 to 8. And there's one pick per brand, so no single company takes over the stocking. That gave us 23 items.
What passes that rule mostly fits a stocking. The table up top shows all 23 with their age range and the fields the data has, like players, play time and piece count. A dash means the listing doesn't say.
One honest note. Our data doesn't record box sizes. A couple of picks, like a 686-piece brick set, may end up under the tree instead of inside a sock. I've flagged those below.
Here's the table version of what follows:
This is my one opinion on this page, and the listings let you check it. A gift that comes out of a sock at 6 a.m. should need nothing else. No base game, no paint, no glue, no trip to the store on December 26.
The data backs this list on that point. Six of the games here are marked as standalone games, not expansions: Gamie Snakes and Ladders, Funko Dr. Seuss Pattern Party, Kanoodle Jr., the HABA Pantomime Game, Twister Party Classic and Pongdemonium. The Airfix kit's listing says no paint or glue is needed. Spot It Bluey lists 15 minutes a game.
An expansion adds rules to a game you haven't learned yet, and it needs a base game to work at all. A kit that wants paint waits on a shelf until someone buys the paint. Neither one gets played before breakfast.
A stocking gift gets opened early, often before coffee, by a kid with four more things to open. Quick to start beats big.
Card games are the classic stocking stuffer for a reason. They're flat, they're short, and they get played before breakfast is cold. Every game in this group lists a starting age of 3 or 4.
Mattel UNO Junior is the Junior edition of the shedding game, for 2–4 players and listed for 3 and up. A shedding game means you win by getting rid of your cards first. If your house already plays standard UNO, the UNO page shows other editions.
Asmodee Spot It Bluey is the Bluey edition of the matching and speed game. It lists 2–8 players and 15 minutes, comes in a storage tin, and says 4 and up. A tin is good news on a stocking list. It closes, so the cards stay together. The Spot It page has the other editions.
Ravensburger Eye Found It World of Disney Card Game is a matching and speed card game listed for ages 3–8. That top number matters. A 9-year-old is past the range the listing gives.
Speed games have one rule nobody prints: the youngest player is faster than you think. Sam has a policy of slapping the table on every turn whether or not he has a match. It is not in the rules. It has never been overruled.
Gamie Snakes and Ladders comes with a 14-inch board, 6 pegs and 1 die, for 2–6 players, listed for 3 and up. It's a roll-and-move game, so the die makes every decision. That's the point at age 3. Nobody has to plan, and the grown-up can lose without trying. More versions are on the Snakes and Ladders page.
Funko Dr. Seuss Pattern Party is a Dr. Seuss–themed game listed for 3 and up. The data doesn't give players or play time, so check the listing before you count chairs.
Blue Orange Games Mom'N Pups is listed for ages 3–5 and 2–4 players. It fits a preschooler's first table game.
Buffalo Games Chuckle & Roar Alphabet Matching Memory is a letters and matching memory game for ages 3–5, per the title.
Melissa & Doug PAW Patrol Spy Find & Rescue Wooden Take-Along Game is a wooden take-along game for ages 3–5, per the title. "Take-along" is the key word for a stocking. It's meant for the car, the waiting room and the grandparents' couch.
Educational Insights Kanoodle Jr. is a puzzle game listed for ages 4–7. The data doesn't list player counts, so check the listing if you want to know whether it plays solo. See the Kanoodle page for the other versions.
A note from a math teacher: a memory game is the only test I've ever seen a 4-year-old ask to take twice.
Building toys are where a stocking pays off on the 26th. Most of these list a starting age of 3, and that comes with a rule.
Small parts: Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3. The CPSC says to store toys with small parts out of reach of children under 3, and that applies to the bits a big kid drops on the floor.
Geomag Glitter 68-piece is a magnetic building set of 68 pieces, listed for 3 and up. See Geomag and the magnetic tiles page for bigger sets.
Magnets: Swallowed magnets can cause serious internal injuries. The CPSC says two or more swallowed magnets can pull together inside the body. Keep loose or broken magnetic pieces away from young children, and get medical care right away if you think a child swallowed one.
Both fit the price rule, and both may need a spot next to the stocking. I'd call that a stocking with an annex.
MEGA Pokémon Luxio is a small Pokémon build from the MEGA line, listed for 6 and up. The data has no piece count. See MEGA and the Pokémon building sets page.
nanoblock Squirtle is a 110-piece build from the Pokémon line, 1.7 in tall when finished, listed for 8 and up. It's the oldest starting age on the page. Nanoblock pieces are small, so this suits a careful builder who likes a finished piece on a desk. More at nanoblock.
Airfix J6026 Quickbuild Lamborghini Aventador is a snap kit, listed for 6 and up. The listing says the parts are pre-colored, no paint or glue is needed, and stickers are included. Snap means the parts press together. That makes it a first model kit with no glue to dry and no paint to clean up. See Airfix.
December brings a bigger table. Three picks here are built for a crowd and a cleared floor.
Hasbro Twister Party Classic is a physical and dexterity game for 2 or more players, listed for 6 and up. It's the one game where the grown-ups lose on flexibility, not strategy. (I teach middle school. I can still reach left hand red. Getting back up is a separate project.) See Twister.
MindWare Pongdemonium is a dexterity party game with 45 challenge cards and 10 write-in cards, listed for 6 and up. Write-in cards mean the family can add its own challenges, which in our house means Lucho will add six.
HABA Children's Pantomime Game is a pantomime game listed for 5 and up. Pantomime means acting something out with no words. The data doesn't list players or play time, so check the listing before game night. More party picks are on the party games page.
Bandai Dragon Stars Series Dragon Ball Super Broly (Series 12) is a 6.5-inch figure with 20 points of articulation, listed for 4 and up. Articulation means the places a figure can bend. It comes with character-specific accessories and 2 sets of interchangeable hands, per the listing. See Bandai.
A 6.5-inch figure is a shelf decision as much as a gift. Marisol once ran a surveyor's tape across Lucho's figure shelves and gave him a number: eleven more fit, if he stopped buying the big ones. He wrote the number on masking tape. The masking tape is still there. Before you add a figure to a stocking, find out where it's going to stand.
Small parts: Figure accessories and spare hands are small parts. Keep them away from children under 3.
Most of the list starts young, but a lot of it doesn't stop. Sixteen picks list an age range with no top end. Here's how they sort for older kids.
For a kid between 8 and 12, the nanoblock Squirtle (8 and up) and the PLUS PLUS pad (5–12) both fit. So does the Airfix snap kit, which gives a tween a first model with no paint or glue. A tween who likes to host can take Pongdemonium or Spot It Bluey to a sleepover.
Teens tend to want something they can finish that day or play with friends. The nanoblock build, the Airfix kit and Pongdemonium all list open-ended age ranges. The Bandai Dragon Stars Broly suits a teen who already has a shelf. For bigger gifts, see gifts for teens.
I'm not going to split this list by who's asking. A boy who builds gets a brick set. A boy who wants to win gets UNO Junior or Spot It Bluey. A boy who poses figures gets Broly. That's the same advice for every kid. The gifts for boys page sorts the bigger list the same way.
Adults are covered by the open-ended labels. Twister, Pongdemonium and Spot It Bluey all work with a grown-up at the table. The Airfix kit and the nanoblock build are quiet desk projects for a parent who needs one. Nothing on this page is made only for adults.
None of the picks above lists a battery in our data. But stockings also collect light-up toys, small remotes and holiday gadgets from other places.
Button batteries: Button batteries can cause serious injury if swallowed. The CPSC says one can burn through a child's throat in as little as two hours. Keep spares locked away, check that battery covers are screwed shut, and go to the emergency room right away if you think a child swallowed one.
Skip this page if you're shopping for a baby or a 2-year-old. Every pick starts at 3 or older, and most have small parts. Skip the age-capped picks for a kid who's past the range. UNO Junior is fine at any age, but Eye Found It stops at 8 and Kanoodle Jr. stops at 7. And if you want one big gift instead of a handful of small ones, the gifts for kids page or the gifts for 8 year olds page is a better start. A stocking is a warm-up act, not the main show.
Fill the toe first.
Look for small things a teen can finish or play the same morning. On this list, the nanoblock Squirtle is a 110-piece build that ends up 1.7 in tall, the Airfix Lamborghini is a snap kit that needs no paint or glue, and Pongdemonium is a party game with 45 challenge cards. All three list an open-ended age range, so they fit 13 and up.
The same ones that suit girls. Start with what the kid does on a free afternoon. A builder gets a small set, a kid who likes to win gets a card game, and a kid who poses figures gets the Bandai Dragon Stars figure. Then check that the listing's starting age is at or below the child's age.
Several list an age range with no top end, which means grown-ups count. UNO Junior, Spot It Bluey, Twister Party Classic and Pongdemonium are table and party games an adult can play with the kids. The nanoblock build and the Airfix snap kit are small desk projects. Nothing here is made only for adults.
Yes. Brick sets, building kits, game pieces and figure accessories are small parts, and the Geomag Glitter set is magnetic. The CPSC says toys with small parts must carry an age label if they are a choking hazard for children under 3. Keep these away from babies and toddlers, and keep loose magnetic pieces out of reach.
Prices change too often to print. Every pick here was in our lowest price tier when we last checked the listing, and that tier is how the list was built. The Check price button shows the current price. If it has moved up since our check, the next refresh of this page will catch it.
