Building Blocks: Brick Sets for Kids and Grown-Ups

What building blocks are on this page

Here's the short version. A building block, on this page, is a plastic brick that locks onto other bricks. Studs on top, a socket underneath, press down, done. That covers three groups in our data:

• Brick sets — themed sets with a booklet, from small kids' builds to big display models
• Licensed sets — sets built around a named line on the listing, such as a movie or a game
• Mini and compatible bricks — smaller pieces from makers like PLUS PLUS and nanoblock, often sold in tubs or small kits

All together that's 549 sets as of 2026-10-23. The table above sorts them from the biggest stated piece count down. Sets that don't state a count sit lower in the list. That's not a judgment. It's just where a blank sorts.

Wooden blocks and magnetic tiles live on their own pages: wooden blocks and magnetic tiles. They don't lock the way bricks do, so they're read differently.

How to choose brick building sets: what to look at

Brick listings carry a lot of numbers. Most of them are about the build, not the builder. Here are the fields that matter, in the order I'd read them.

Recommended age: the line that rules a set in or out

The age label is the first thing to read and the one we never bend. We use it as the listing states it, in the title, the bullets or the maker's page. We don't take it from the spec box, which often disagrees with itself.

In our data, 373 of 549 brick sets state an age. Here's how the starting ages spread:

Starting age on the listing	Sets
Under 6	33
6 to 9	172
10 to 13	48
14 to 17	32
18+	88

That last row surprises people. A lot of brick sets are made for adults now: display cars, buildings, licensed scenes. The label says so, and it isn't decoration.

My one opinion on this page: the age on the box works in both directions. A low number on a kids' set is often about small parts, not about smarts. A high number on a display set is about the build: hundreds of tiny pieces, a long booklet, steps that punish a skipped page. The LEGO 75192 Millennium Falcon lists 16+ and 7,541 pieces. The PLUS PLUS Basic Color Mix Tub lists ages 5 to 12 and 3,600 pieces. Both are big boxes. They're made for very different people, and the label tells you which.

Piece count: how long the build runs, not how good it is

The piece count is how many pieces are in the box. It's a decent guess at build time and table space. It isn't a quality score.

Only 213 of the 549 sets in our data state a count, so many rows show a dash. We take the count from the title, the bullets or the maker. Some listings show "1" or "25" in the spec box for a set with hundreds of pieces, and we skip those numbers.

Here's how the stated counts spread:

• Under 250 pieces: 45 sets
• 250 to 499: 46 sets
• 500 to 999: 46 sets
• 1,000 to 1,999: 36 sets
• 2,000 and up: 40 sets

The top of the table is all display builds. The Mould King Heavy Crane lists 8,506 pieces. The Mould King 17070 Large Excavator lists 4,767. CaDA's car models, like the C64008W Mercedes-AMG GT3 at 5,466 pieces, sit in the same range.

A math-teacher note on sorting. Say a set has 2,000 pieces in ten colors. That's 200 per color on average. The average is lying. There are always more gray ones.

Theme, licence and product line

Many listings name a product line or a licence. In our data, 311 of the 549 sets name a licence, and the rest are the maker's own designs. A licensed set is built around a named line on the listing: LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO DC, Masters of the Universe, Pokémon, and car makers such as Mercedes-AMG, Lotus and Mazda.

We list the line exactly as the listing does. Nothing more. If the person you're buying for loves a particular line, this field is how you find it fast. If they don't, the line doesn't change how the bricks fit together.

Set number: how to find the exact box

A set number is the maker's code for one set, like 75192 or C61505W. In our data, 108 brick sets list one. It's the quickest way to check you're looking at the box you meant. Two sets can share a name, and the number settles it. The Mould King Roller Coaster shows up twice in the table, once with the set number 11014 and once without. Both list 3,646 pieces.

Minifigures: the small people in the set

A minifigure is a small figure that comes with the set. The count tells you how many characters the build includes. In our data, the LEGO 76300 Batman Arkham Asylum lists 16 and MEGA's Snake Mountain lists 6. Most listings don't state a count, so a dash here means "not listed", not "none".

Minifigures are small and have small accessories. That matters if a younger sibling shares the floor.

Built-in lights

Some display sets come with lights built in. In our data, 36 listings say so, and most of them are FUNWHOLE buildings like the Antique Store, Mountain Cabin and Western Saloon. A CaDA vehicle, the C61036W HUUMVEE, also lists lighting.

Lights need power. Check the listing's parts list for the battery type and whether batteries are in the box. Button batteries can cause serious injury if swallowed. Keep spares locked away and check that battery covers are screwed shut.

Brick size and compatibility

Not every brick is the same size. PLUS PLUS listings call their piece a "mini waffle", and it's a single shape that locks to itself, not a studded brick. nanoblock makes very small bricks for small, detailed models.

We say a set works with another system only when its listing says so. In our data, 24 sets state a compatibility line. MEGA's Motion Gyarados is one: its listing says it combines with all MEGA Pokémon building sets and is compatible with other name brands. That's the listing's claim. We don't extend it to other sets.

Kinds of brick sets and when to choose which

The 549 sets split into a few kinds. Pick the kind first.

Kids' brick sets with a booklet

These are the sets most people picture: a themed box, a numbered booklet, a finished model at the end. In our data, most kids' sets start between 6 and 9. They're the right place to begin for a builder who can follow steps and wants the box picture at the end.

Display builds for teens and adults

These are the big numbers in the table. Most of the sets above 2,000 pieces are display models: cars from CaDA, machines from Mould King, lit buildings from FUNWHOLE, and licensed scenes. Many list 14+ or 18+. They're about the build and the shelf afterward. They aren't meant to be played with on the floor.

Licensed sets

A licensed set wraps the bricks around a named line from the listing. You'll find them across every age band, from 6+ kids' sets to 18+ display builds. If you're shopping by line, we have two lists that go deeper: LEGO Star Wars sets and Pokémon building sets.

Tubs and mini bricks

Tubs are loose bricks with no single model to finish. The PLUS PLUS Basic, Neon & Glitter Mix Tub lists 2,400 pieces and ages 7 to 12. A tub suits a kid who likes to make up their own builds. A booklet set suits a kid who likes to finish one. You know which kid you have.

Big blocks for toddlers

Large toddler blocks are their own group on this site. They're bigger, simpler and labeled for younger ages, and they aren't counted in the 549 here. If you're shopping for a 3-year-old, the gifts for 3-year-olds page checks every pick against the age label.

Who makes brick building sets

The table mixes makers by the data, not by preference. Makers in this group include LEGO, MEGA, CaDA, Mould King, FUNWHOLE, Sluban, McFarlane Toys, PLUS PLUS and nanoblock. Each brand page lists everything that maker has on Amazon US in our data.

Who should skip a big brick set

Skip the display builds if the builder is younger than the label. That one is simple.

Skip any set with a booklet if the builder would rather make things up. A tub or a pile of loose bricks fits that kid better, and costs them nothing in fun.

Skip a set over a couple thousand pieces if you don't have a table that can hold a half-finished build for a while. Big sets take more than one sitting. A build that has to be cleared off for dinner every night tends to stall.

And skip the whole category for a household with a crawling baby, unless you have a room or a table they can't reach. Bricks travel.

Small parts and brick sets

Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3. The CPSC bans small parts in toys made for children under 3 and requires a warning label on certain toys with small parts.

Bricks, minifigures and their accessories are small. If a younger child shares the house, build at a table they can't reach and store pieces in a bin with a lid. Throw away the plastic wrap once the box is open, as the CPSC advises.

Where to go next

If you're shopping for a particular kid, the gift pages sort brick sets by the age on the label: gifts for 8-year-olds and gifts for teens are good places to start. The building toys section has every other kind of building set.

Read the label first. Count the pieces second. Count the birthdays always.
