Card Games for Every Table

The best card games for your house are the ones that fit your usual head count, your youngest player's age and the time you have, and the side of the box tells you all three. This page lists the card games we track on Amazon US, the biggest stated player counts first, and explains the fields that separate them: kind of game, age, play time, card count and more. A deck is the cheapest table in the house to set up. It needs about one square foot and a little elbow room.

What’s in this listEvery card game we track on Amazon US, most stated players first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What counts as a card game

A card game is any game where the cards do the work. No board, or only a tiny one. No dice, usually. Everything you need fits in a box or a tin, and most of it fits in a coat pocket.

That covers a wide shelf. On this page you'll find shedding games, where you race to empty your hand. Speed and matching games, where the fastest eye wins. Party games built around big groups. And the old standards that use a regular deck, or several. The table above lists the card games we track on Amazon US, with the biggest stated player count first, because head count is the first question most people have.

Here's the short version of what separates them, as the listings state it:

What to look at before you buy a card game

Player count, minimum and maximum

This is the field I'd read first. Every card game lists a range, and both ends matter.

The maximum tells you how big a crowd it handles. In our data, the UNO Championship Series Expanded Tournament Set lists 6 to 30, and the two Cards Against Humanity editions list 4 to 20. Most UNO editions list 2 to 10, and the Spot It editions list 2 to 8.

The minimum is the end people miss. Happy Salmon, Think 'N Sync and Traitor Tots all need at least 3. Cards Against Humanity needs 4. The UNO tournament set needs 6. A game that needs 4 is a coaster in a house of two.

My one opinion for this page: buy for your usual group size, not the biggest number on the box. A game that seats 10 isn't a better game for a family of four. It's the same game with more waiting between turns.

Age on the box

The age range on the listing works like a floor. Most UNO editions in our data list 7+. Most Spot It editions list 6+, Spot It Connect lists 8+, and Spot It Bluey lists 4+. Hasbro's Traitor Tots and Beat The Heat list 8+. Cards Against Humanity lists 17+, so it's a grown-up table only.

Some listings leave the age out. A dash in the table means we don't know, not that it's fine for everyone. This site doesn't suggest a game for a child younger than the age on its listing.

Play time

Card games are short, mostly. Where the listings give a time, the Spot It editions run 10 to 15 minutes, Beat The Heat lists 20 and Traitor Tots lists 25. Many listings, including the UNO editions, don't give one at all.

Play time on a turn-by-turn game changes with head count. In a shedding game like UNO, every extra player is one more turn before it comes back to you. In a game where everyone plays at once, like Spot It, adding players doesn't add turns the same way. When a listing gives no time, plan from your group size.

Kind of game

Our data tags each card game with a kind, from the listing. The ones on this page:

Some listings, like Traitor Tots, Beat The Heat and Think 'N Sync, don't name a kind, so the table leaves that field empty. Pick the kind first. Someone who hates being rushed will not enjoy a speed game, no matter what's printed on the cards.

Card count

Only a few listings give a card count, and it's useful when they do. Cards Against Humanity's Canadian and Tiny Editions list 600 cards. Think 'N Sync lists 225. Happy Salmon lists 98. The Spot It Spider-Man and Sports editions list 55.

A bigger number isn't a better game. It usually means more variety in one kind of game, like more prompts in a party game. A 55-card matching game and a 600-card party game are built for completely different evenings. Count the players, not the cards.

Storage tin

Seven listings in our data say they come with a storage tin. That includes UNO Harry Potter, the UNO set with 2 Add On Packs, UNO Netflix KPop Demon Hunters, Spot It Bluey, the Spot It Spider-Man and Sports editions, and Scatter Brain. A tin matters more than it sounds. The card boxes in my closet split at the corners years ago, and two of them are held together by a rubber band and hope. A tin goes in a glove box, a beach bag or a backpack and comes back in one piece.

Colorblind-accessible decks

Six UNO listings in our data state they're colorblind accessible: the Amazon Exclusive UNO, Giant UNO, UNO Attack, UNO Spin, UNO Gold Edition and UNO WWE. In a game where you match by color, that line can decide whether everyone at the table can play on equal terms. If someone in your family needs it, read that line on the listing before you buy, because not every UNO edition says it.

Edition

Many card games come in editions: a theme, a size or a twist on the rules. The edition field shows the name on the listing. For UNO, that includes themed decks named as on their listings, such as Super Mario, Minecraft, Harry Potter, Disney Princesses, Disney and Pixar Toy Story 5, WWE and Netflix KPop Demon Hunters. It also includes rule twists like UNO Attack, UNO Spin, UNO Dare and UNO Splash, and a size change in Giant UNO. For Spot It, editions include the 2024 Refresh in Eco-Blister, Eco-Sleeve and Pocket Eco versions, plus themed decks.

If you already own a plain deck, an edition is the reason to buy a second one. If you don't, start with the plain version and add a theme later.

Kinds of card games, and when to pick which

Shedding games

Race to empty your hand. Turns are quick, everyone can learn in one hand, and the table stays in it until the last card. UNO is the big name here, with more than a dozen editions in our data. Pick a shedding game for a mixed-age group where nobody wants to read a long rulebook. The whole UNO turn fits in one sentence: match the top card or draw.

Matching and speed games

Everyone plays at once, and the quickest eye wins. Spot It is the main family here, plus Happy Salmon and Scatter Brain. Rounds are short, and a 6-year-old can beat a grown-up fair and square. Pick these for short attention spans and loud tables. Skip them for anyone who hates feeling rushed.

Party and group games

Built for a crowd, often with big card counts. Cards Against Humanity is listed for 17+, so it's for adults. Traitor Tots lists 3 to 10 and Think 'N Sync lists 3 to 8. Pick these when the guest list is long. Check the minimum, since most need 3 or more.

Trick-taking games like Rook

In a trick-taking game, everyone plays one card per round and the best card takes the round. Hasbro's Rook rulebook is a good example. Each hand has a trump color, you must follow the color that was led if you can, and the Rook Bird card beats everything. Points come from scoring cards inside the tricks you take. The rulebook also includes a beginner game with no bidding, which is where I'd start a new table.

In that beginner game, the scoring cards are worth small, friendly numbers: 1 point for each 5, 2 for each 10 or 14, and 4 for the Rook Bird card. First to 40 wins. I teach middle-school math, and I've handed out worse worksheets than a Rook score pad.

Standard decks and big-deck games

Nertz with 12 decks is the outlier here: a playing-card game for 2 to 12, with a deck for each player. When everyone needs their own deck, a 12-deck box saves you from mismatched backs and a sorting job afterward. Lucho saw the box and asked if it counted as a game or as inventory.

Who should skip card games

Skip card games if your group wants a board to look at, pieces to move or a story that builds over an evening. Card games are fast and compact by design, and some players find that thin. A board game with a map will suit them better.

Skip speed games for anyone who gets upset at losing quickly, and skip shedding games if two of your players can't stand a game that turns on the last draw. And skip any game for a player under its listed age. Cards Against Humanity is 17+ on the listing, whatever the size of the box.

Questions people ask

What is the best card game?

There isn't one answer, and any list that gives one is guessing about your table. Start with three numbers from the box: how many players it seats, the youngest age it lists and how long it says a game takes. On this page, UNO editions list 2 to 10 players and ages 7+, Spot It editions list 2 to 8 and mostly 10 minutes, and Cards Against Humanity lists 17+.

What are the best card games for a big group?

Sort by the maximum on the box. In our data, the UNO Championship Series Expanded Tournament Set lists 6 to 30 players, Cards Against Humanity's Canadian and Tiny Editions list 4 to 20, Nertz with 12 decks lists 2 to 12, and Traitor Tots and Beat The Heat list up to 10. Check the minimum too: some big-group games need 3 or 4 to start.

What card games can two people play?

Any game on this page that lists a minimum of 2. That includes the UNO editions, the Spot It editions, Nertz, Beat The Heat and Scatter Brain. Picnic Twist lists 1 player and up. Games that need 3 or more, like Happy Salmon, Think 'N Sync and Traitor Tots, aren't for a table of two, and Cards Against Humanity needs 4.

What does colorblind accessible mean on a card game?

It means the listing says the deck is made so players with color vision deficiency can tell the cards apart. The listings don't explain how each deck does it. In our data, it's stated on several UNO listings, including the Amazon Exclusive UNO, Giant UNO, UNO Attack, UNO Spin, UNO Gold Edition and UNO WWE. If it matters at your table, check that line on the listing.

What kind of card game is Rook?

Rook is a trick-taking card game. Hasbro's Rook rulebook (B0966) describes taking tricks, a trump color chosen each hand and a Rook Bird card that beats everything. The same rulebook prints versions for 2, 3, 4 and 5 or 6 players, plus a beginner game without bidding. Check the table on this page for any Rook listing currently in our data.
