Spot It: The Matching Game and Its Editions

Spot It is a speed-matching card game for 2 to 8 players, ages 6+ and 10 minutes on the Classic listing. Any two cards share exactly one symbol, and the first person to find it and say it out loud wins the card. There's no turn order, so nobody waits. Amazon US lists more than 20 Spot It decks, from the Classic tin to 4+ kids' decks and Spot It Connect at 8+. The one-match rule is the whole trick, and it's a real piece of math.

What’s in this listEditions and versions of Spot It sold on Amazon US, matched by the name on the listing. Players, age and play time come from the box or listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What Spot It is

Spot It is a matching game played with round cards. Each card has 8 symbols on it, in different sizes. Pick any two cards and they share exactly one symbol. Same shape, same color, maybe a different size. Your job is to find it before anyone else and say its name out loud.

There are no turns. Everyone looks at the same cards at the same time, and the fastest eyes win. That's why a 6-year-old can beat a grown-up at Spot It fair and square. Reading doesn't help. Age doesn't help. Looking helps.

Spot It is sold as Dobble outside the US. The publisher's English rulebook for Dobble carries a trademark line naming Spot It, Dobble and the Dobble characters together, and that's the rulebook I'm working from.

The Classic deck's box facts, from the listing and the rulebook:

It's competitive, with no team mode in the Classic rulebook. There's nothing to expand. Every deck is a complete game.

The one-match rule, and why it works

Here's my one math aside for this page, and it's a good one. A Classic deck has 55 cards. The number of different pairs you can make from 55 cards is 55 × 54 ÷ 2, which is 1,485. Every one of those 1,485 pairs shares exactly one symbol. Not zero, not two. One.

That's not luck. The rulebook's history note says the idea came from an old math puzzle about schoolgirls walking in rows of three, and from structures mathematicians call incomplete balanced blocks. Seventh graders don't get to that one, but they can count the pairs. I've seen a class go quiet trying to find a pair of cards that breaks the rule. Nobody has.

How Spot It plays

The rules below are in my own words, from the Dobble Classic rulebook. The rulebook in a US Spot It box may name or order the games a little differently, so if your sheet disagrees with mine, your sheet wins. You can play them in any order, or only your favorites, and whoever wins the most mini-games is the overall champion.

Before your first game

Draw two cards and lay them face up where everyone can see. Find the match. Say its name. Draw two more and repeat until everyone at the table gets it: there's always one match, and only one. That's the whole lesson. It takes about a minute.

Game 1: The Tower

Deal one card face down to each player. The rest go face up in a pile in the middle. Everyone flips their card at once. When you spot the match between your top card and the middle card, call it out, take the middle card and put it on top of your pile. Now your top card is new, and so is the middle one. When the middle pile runs out, the biggest pile wins.

Game 2: The Well

Put one card face up in the middle and deal out the rest as evenly as you can. Everyone flips their whole pile face up. Spot a match between your top card and the middle card, call it, and put your card on top of the middle. First player out of cards wins.

Game 3: The Hot Potato

This one runs over several rounds, five at least. Each round, everyone gets one card and holds it flat on an open hand. Spot a match between your card and another player's, call it, and put your card on theirs. If you're holding a stack, only your top card counts, and you hand the whole stack over. The player who ends up with all the cards keeps them. After the last round, the fewest cards wins.

Game 4: The Poisoned Gift

Deal one card face down to each player and put the rest face up in the middle. Everyone flips at once. This time you look for a match between the middle card and someone else's card. Call it, then put the middle card on that player's pile. You're handing them a card they don't want. Fewest cards at the end wins. It's the only gift-giving game I know where receiving is losing.

Game 5: The Triplet

Lay out 9 cards face up and keep the rest in a pile. Look for one symbol that appears on three of the cards. Call it, take the three cards, and deal three new ones in. The game ends when fewer than 9 cards are left and there's no set of three. Most cards wins.

Ties and arguments

The rulebook has a simple rule for close calls: the first player to say the symbol's name wins, and if it's still a tie, the first to grab or place the card. If two players tie for first in a mini-game, they flip one card each and race for the match. Three or more tied play a round of Hot Potato.

The second page of the rulebook names every symbol, which settles a lot of arguments. Some names come with a slash, like "Knight/Horse" and "Dinosaur/T-Rex". I read that as proof the arguments started at the publisher's office before they ever reached my table. At our table, any name everyone understands counts. That's our call, not the publisher's.

Spot It editions on Amazon US right now

Our data lists 21 Spot It decks on Amazon US as of October 2026, from Asmodee, USAopoly and Masterpieces. The table above shows the players, age and time each listing states, with a dash where it leaves one out. They split into four groups.

Spot It Classic, 2024 Refresh

Three listings are the Classic deck in its 2024 Refresh:

The numbers are identical. The edition names point to packaging, and the listings don't explain more than that. If you want the game on this page, start here and pick the package you like.

Decks for younger players

Four listings state ages 4+:

Two more are aimed at kids by name but don't state an age on their listings: Spot It 1,2,3 (2 to 8 players, 10 minutes) and Spot It Super Pack Kids, Eco Big Box (2 to 8 players, 10 minutes). The publisher's page for the European Dobble 1,2,3 describes matching numbers, shapes and colors. Since the US listing gives no age, check the box before you buy for a child under 6.

Spot It Connect

Spot It Connect lists 2 to 8 players, ages 8+ and 15 minutes. It's the only deck in our data with a starting age above 6. The publisher describes its European version, Dobble Connect, as a more tactical take with a row-of-four goal, 90 cards and team play. If your family has outgrown Classic, this is the step up.

Themed decks

The rest are themed decks, named as on their listings:

Where the listings give details, they're 2 to 8 players and 10 or 15 minutes. Camping, Disney, Spider-Man and Sports list ages 6+. Spider-Man, Sports and the NFL Edition list 55 cards and a storage tin, and The Grinch lists a tin too. Several themed listings don't give an age, so read the listing for those.

The theme changes the symbols, not the rules. If the person you're shopping for already owns Classic, a theme they care about is the reason to own a second deck.

Which Spot It fits your house

My one opinion for this page: piece count is not value. A bigger box doesn't mean a better game. Every deck in our data that states a card count says 55, and the five mini-games work the same with any of them. What changes from deck to deck is the age on the label and the pictures on the cards.

A few matches, from the listings:

Who should skip Spot It

Skip it if someone at your table hates being rushed. Spot It is pure speed, and the fastest player wins most rounds. Some kids love that. Some adults find it stressful from the first card.

Skip it, too, if you want a game with choices. There's no strategy in Spot It beyond looking harder. It's a warm-up, a waiting-room game, a game for the last ten minutes before bed. It isn't the main event on a long evening.

And skip a 6+ deck for a child under 6, and a 4+ deck for a child under 4. The listings set those floors, and so do we.

If you like Spot It, look at these

Pages chosen by what they share with Spot It: short rounds, everyone playing at once, and eyes doing the work.

Flip a card, find the match, say the name. Then do it 54 more times.

Questions people ask

How many cards are in Spot It?

The publisher's rulebook for the classic game (sold as Dobble outside the US) says 55 cards with 8 symbols on each. In our data, the Spot It Spider-Man, Sports and NFL Edition listings also state 55 cards. Most other Spot It listings don't give a card count, so check the listing before you count on a number.

Is there a Spot It Junior?

None of the Spot It listings in our data uses the word Junior right now. The decks listed for younger players are Spot It Animals, Spot It Bluey, Spot It Hello Kitty and Friends and Spot It Squishmallows, all at ages 4+ on their listings. Spot It 1,2,3 and the Super Pack Kids box don't state an age on their listings.

How many people can play Spot It?

Every Spot It listing in our data that gives a player count says 2 to 8. That covers the Classic decks, the kids' decks, the themed decks and Spot It Connect. Because everyone plays at once, an 8-player game doesn't take much longer than a 2-player game. It just gets louder.

What is Spot It Connect?

Spot It Connect is a newer game in the line, listed for 2 to 8 players, ages 8+ and 15 minutes. The publisher's page for its European version, Dobble Connect, describes it as a more tactical take where the goal is to line up four cards in a row, and lists 90 cards and team play.

How do you win at Spot It?

It depends on the mini-game. The rulebook has five. In some you win by collecting the most cards, in one you win by emptying your pile first, and in others you win by ending up with the fewest cards. Many families play all five and count who won the most, which is what the rulebook suggests for an overall champion.
