MEGA Bloks: Sets, Lines and Ages

MEGA Bloks covers two very different kinds of building toy under one name: big, chunky First Builders blocks that list ages 1 and up, and small-brick MEGA sets in licensed lines like Pokémon and Halo that list 6+ to 8+. So the first question isn't which set. It's which size of brick fits the kid. A 6-piece fire truck and a 3,508-piece castle share a brand name, and very little else.

What MEGA makes

MEGA makes plastic building toys in two sizes. The big ones are the MEGA Bloks you probably picture: chunky, easy-grip blocks for babies and toddlers, sold as First Builders, Peek A Blocks, Lil' Vehicles and similar sets. The small ones are brick sets for older kids and grown-ups, often in licensed lines. In our data those include Pokémon, Halo, Masters of the Universe, Call of Duty and Game of Thrones.

On Amazon US, the brand shows up under two store names, MEGA BLOKS and Mega Brands, and the listings name Mattel as the manufacturer. Mattel's own online shop also sells MEGA BLOKS and MEGA Pokémon sets, including one toddler block toy named for both MEGA BLOKS and Fisher-Price. Our data files the line under three types: toddler blocks, licensed sets and brick sets. You'll find them next to other makers on the building blocks type page.

The grid above shows MEGA's live listings on Amazon US as of 2026-10-23. Many are sold by third-party sellers, sometimes with only a few left. The grid only shows what was priced, in stock and deliverable when we checked.

MEGA Bloks for toddlers: First Builders and friends

The toddler sets are the heart of MEGA Bloks. In our data, almost all of them list ages 1+, and they're described as big interlocking bricks.

Big Building Bags

The Big Building Bags are the plainest way in. Our data has a 60-piece bag in blue and in pink, an 80-piece Big Building Bag, a pink First Builders bag without a stated count, and the First Builders Deluxe Building Bag at 150 pieces. Most list ages 1+ and come with storage, which on these is the bag itself.

A bag of plain blocks suits a toddler who wants to stack, knock down and stack again. It's also the right base for a collection, because the First Builders listings say they're compatible with all MEGA BLOKS building toys.

Vehicles and playsets

Some toddler sets build a thing with wheels or a scene:

A small-piece-count vehicle set is a toy first and a building set second. Six pieces build one truck, and then the truck drives into the kitchen. If you want a child to build, pair a vehicle set with a bag of plain blocks.

Learning sets

The Build 'n Learn Table comes in blue and pink, each with 30 pieces and storage, ages 1+. The ABC Learning Train (60 pieces) and ABC Musical Train (50 pieces, with music and sounds) are both 1+. If a set plays sounds, check the listing for the battery type, and check that the battery cover is screwed shut.

The PAW Patrol Rocky's City Recycling Truck (11 pieces) is the one toddler-type set in our data with a later start: 3+. Read that label. It's the reason a 2-year-old shouldn't get this one yet.

MEGA brick sets for older kids

The small-brick side of MEGA is a different toy. These are sets with instructions for one model, and they list ages 6 and up in our data.

Pokémon sets

Pokémon is the biggest licensed line in our MEGA data. Ages run from 6+ to 7+:

A finished size in inches is rare on building sets, and it's useful. A 12-inch build needs a 12-inch shelf. For more Pokémon sets from several makers, see best Pokémon building sets.

Halo sets

Every Halo set in our data that states an age says 8+: UNSC Marine Defense (4 figures), Breacher Exosuit (1 figure), Hijacked Ghost (123 pieces, 4 figures) and the Halo Heroes XIV Bundle. The Operation Stonebreak Drop Pod (1 figure) doesn't state an age in our data. The Halo listings say they combine with all MEGA Construx building sets and are compatible with major brands.

Big display builds

A few MEGA sets are large display models:

None of these four states an age in our data. They come up when people search for MEGA Bloks for adults. Read the box for the age before you buy any of them for a child.

A math aside. The smallest set on this page has 6 pieces. Castle Grayskull has 3,508. That's a ratio of about 585 to 1 on one brand page. I once put a ratio like that on a quiz. The class got through it. They had opinions.

How to pick a MEGA set

  1. Pick the brick size first. Big blocks for a baby or toddler, small bricks for a kid of 6 or older. The two sizes don't belong in the same bin.
  2. Then read the age. Toddler sets mostly say 1+. One says 3+. Brick sets say 6+, 7+ or 8+, and a few big ones don't say.
  3. For toddlers, start with a bag. A plain Big Building Bag teaches stacking. Add a vehicle or Peek A Blocks set once the bag gets used.
  4. For older kids, pick the line they care about. Then pick a size by piece count or finished height. The building blocks page compares sizes across makers.
  5. Check the seller line. Many MEGA listings are sold by third parties. That's normal for this brand on Amazon, but it's worth a look.

MEGA Bloks vs LEGO

These are different systems, so compare them by age and size, not by brand. In our data, MEGA's small-brick sets list ages 6+ to 8+, and the biggest set in our MEGA data is Castle Grayskull at 3,508 pieces. LEGO's brick sets in our data run much wider, from preschool sets up to 18+ display models, with the largest past 7,000 pieces. Several MEGA listings say their bricks are compatible with other name brands or major brands. We repeat that claim only as MEGA's listings state it, and we don't say any other maker agrees. If a child already has a big collection of one system, the easy choice is more of the same. If you're starting fresh, pick by the line and age that fit. See the LEGO brand page for that lineup.

MEGA Bloks vs DUPLO

Both are big-brick systems for small children. In our data, MEGA's First Builders and related sets mostly list ages 1+, and the Big Building Bags run 60 to 150 pieces. LEGO DUPLO sets in our data list starting ages of 1.5, 2 or 3, with box sizes such as the DUPLO Deluxe Brick Box at 85 pieces. The MEGA First Builders listings say they're compatible with all MEGA BLOKS building toys. None of the MEGA toddler listings in our data says it fits DUPLO, so we don't say it does. For a baby just past the first birthday, the 1+ labels on most MEGA toddler sets are the deciding fact. After that, it comes down to which system the family already has.

Small parts and the age label

Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3. The small-brick MEGA sets list 6+ or older for a reason, so keep them away from babies and toddlers, and keep the two kinds of bricks in separate bins if you have kids at both ages.

Storage and replacement pieces

Several toddler sets come with storage: the Big Building Bags, the Deluxe Building Bag, the John Deere sets, the Build 'n Learn Table and a few vehicles. That's a real plus, because big blocks take a lot of room.

Marisol saw the bag on my screen and said: "A storage bag that comes with the blocks is a parts tray with a drawstring. Use it every night." She has never once let a piece sit on her bench overnight. I'm working on it.

We don't track replacement pieces or loose blocks sold one at a time. Our data covers full sets. If you need a missing piece, the maker's customer service is the place to ask.

What we don't cover

Big blocks for small hands, small bricks for bigger ones. The box says which one you've got.

Questions about MEGA

What age are MEGA Bloks for?

It depends on the line. In our data, First Builders and the other big-block toddler sets mostly list ages 1+, a few list 1–3 or 1–5, and the PAW Patrol Rocky's City Recycling Truck lists 3+. The small-brick Pokémon sets list 6+ or 7+, and the Halo sets list 8+. Some big display sets don't state an age in our data, so read the box.

Who makes MEGA Bloks?

The Amazon US listings name Mattel as the manufacturer, and the brand appears in two Amazon stores, MEGA BLOKS and Mega Brands. Mattel's own online shop sells MEGA BLOKS and MEGA Pokémon sets. We didn't find a first-party source on where the blocks are made, so we leave that out.

What is MEGA Construx?

MEGA Construx is a line name that appears on MEGA's small-brick sets. In our data, the Game of Thrones White Walker Battle lists MEGA Construx as its product line, and several Halo sets say they combine with all MEGA Construx building sets. Newer listings often use just MEGA plus the licensed line name.

What can you build with MEGA Bloks?

With big First Builders blocks, start simple: towers, walls, a house with a door gap, a road for a toy car, a bridge between two stacks. Sets like the John Deere Dump Truck or Build & Race Rig come with a vehicle to build on. Small-brick sets come with instructions for one model; after that, the bricks are yours to rebuild.

How do you store MEGA Bloks?

Several First Builders sets in our data come with storage, including the Big Building Bags and the John Deere sets. For a bigger collection, keep big blocks and small bricks in separate bins with lids, since the two sizes don't belong in one pile. Small-brick sets store best in bags by model, with the instructions in the same bag.

Where can I buy MEGA Bloks?

Every set on this page links to its Amazon US listing through the "Check price" button. Our grid only shows listings that were priced, in stock and deliverable to ZIP 10001 when we checked. Many MEGA listings are sold by third-party sellers, so read the seller line before you buy.
