Hape Marble Run Sets, Quadrilla and Hape Blocks
The Hape marble run line is Quadrilla, and it's the biggest part of Hape's lineup on Amazon US: 12 of the 35 Hape sets we track, with three more Hape marble runs outside that name. Most Quadrilla listings that state an age say 4+. The rest of the lineup is wooden blocks, toddler stackers and a few wooden games, some listed from age 1. Start with one complete Quadrilla set, then add pieces. (A Quadrilla tower can take an afternoon to build. A marble gets through it in seconds, and then everybody asks for one more marble.)

What Hape makes
Hape makes wooden toys, and on Amazon US its lineup has one center: the Hape marble run. We track 35 Hape sets. Fifteen are marble runs, twelve under the Quadrilla name. The rest are wooden blocks, toddler stackers, a few wooden games and one alphabet set.
Hape's global website says the company has been making toys since 1986. It also mentions toys made with bamboo and biomass plastic, and one set in our data, the Made of Bamboo 2.0 Ringo Race, says bamboo in its name.
Here's how the 35 split in our data:
| Type | Sets |
|---|---|
| Marble runs | 15 |
| Wooden blocks | 12 |
| Toddler blocks and stackers | 3 |
| Games | 4 |
| Alphabet and learning set | 1 |
The table at the top of the page shows them all. Most of this page is about the marble runs, because that's what most people come to Hape for.
The Hape marble run: Quadrilla
Quadrilla is Hape's marble run line. Quadrilla sets build towers from wooden pieces and rails, and marbles roll down through them. Hape's own site describes one Quadrilla set as a rotary tower with a marble rail. Twelve Quadrilla sets are in our data, and they come in three kinds.
Complete Quadrilla marble run sets
These are the sets that build a full run out of the box:
- Quadrilla Vertigo 134-Piece, 4+
- Quadrilla Music Motion 97-Piece
- Quadrilla Cyclone
- Quadrilla Super Spirals, 4+
- Quadrilla Cliffhanger E6020, 4+
- Quadrilla Stack Track Bucket Box 90 Piece, 4+
- Quadrilla Race to Finish
The piece counts in the names give a sense of size: 90, 97 and 134 pieces. Some names hint at a feature, like spirals, music or a race. The listings describe those features better than the names do, so read them before you pick by name.
Small Quadrilla sets
Two smaller sets:
- Quadrilla Sonic Playground 13Pcs, 4+
- Quadrilla Mega Skatepark 17 Pieces, 4+
Thirteen and seventeen pieces build short runs. These suit a kid who already has Quadrilla and wants a new piece of track, or a first try before a bigger box.
Quadrilla add-ons and the coding set
- Quadrilla The Luge Add-On Set. Sold as an add-on.
- Quadrilla Marble Racers Add-On Bag of 50 Marbles. More marbles, sold as an add-on.
- Quadrilla Basic Coding Set. The name points at a coding idea built into a marble run. Read the listing for how it works and what it includes.
Here's my one opinion on this page: get the base set to the table before buying add-ons. An add-on adds pieces to a run you haven't built yet. Once a complete set has been up and running a few times, you'll know what the kid wants more of: height, curves, or just more marbles because the old ones rolled under the couch. Then buy that add-on.
Other Hape marble runs
Three Hape marble runs sit outside the Quadrilla name in our data:
- Marble Run Race Track 81 Pieces, 3+. The youngest stated age of any Hape marble run in our data.
- Crazy Rollers Stack Track
- Dino Adventure Marble Run
The Race Track is the one to look at for a 3-year-old, since it's the only Hape marble run in our data that states 3+. The other two don't state an age on the listing, so check the box.
Quadrilla marble run by stated age
| Stated age | Hape marble runs |
|---|---|
| 3+ | Marble Run Race Track 81 Pieces |
| 4+ | Vertigo, Sonic Playground, Cliffhanger, Mega Skatepark, Super Spirals, Stack Track Bucket Box |
| Not stated | Music Motion, Cyclone, Race to Finish, Basic Coding Set, Luge, Marbles bag, Crazy Rollers, Dino Adventure |
So for a child turning 4, six Quadrilla sets in our data state an age that fits. For a 3-year-old, one Hape marble run does. We don't place the unstated ones on any age.
Hape blocks
Hape's other big group is wooden blocks. Twelve sets in our data are wooden blocks and three more are toddler stackers. Here's how they line up by the youngest stated age:
From age 1. The Maple Wood Building Blocks 50 Pieces (1+), the Grow-with-Me 80-Piece Wooden Building Blocks (1 to 6) and the Montessori Stacking Blocks (10 pieces, 1 to 5).
From age 2. The Twist and Turnables (2 to 4), Monster Buddies 3 Pieces (2+), and two art sets: Hape x The Met Hokusai Great Wave and Hape x The Met Van Gogh Wheat Field with Cypresses, both 2 to 8.
No stated age in our data. The 100 PCs Wooden Building Block Set, the Railway Bucket Builder Set 50-Piece, Infinite Imagination Building Blocks, the Farm Wooden Blocks Puzzle, Grip-n-Stack 10-Piece, the Dynamo Wooden Domino Set, the Nature Scene Stacking Blocks (22 pieces) and the Wooden Bunny Balance & Threading Toy.
The Hape x The Met sets are worth a note. They're block sets named for two well-known paintings, listed for ages 2 to 8. That's a long range for a block set, and it makes them one of the few Hape sets a toddler and an older sibling can both use.
For more wooden block sets from other makers, see wooden blocks.
Hape games and the alphabet set
Five Hape sets in our data aren't building toys:
- Made of Bamboo 2.0 Ringo Race, 2 to 4 players
- 2in1 Tic Tac Toe / Snakes & Ladders, 3+
- DO U Play Trigo Portable Ring Toss, 3+, 2 to 4 players
- Lava Crossing, a wooden dexterity game
- Alphabet Learning Pack & Chalkboard Set, 3 to 6
These are small, simple games for young players. If a kid already likes Snakes and Ladders, the 2-in-1 board pairs it with tic-tac-toe in one box. For more on that game, see Snakes and Ladders.
How to pick a Hape set
- Age first. Only sets whose stated starting age your child has reached. For marble runs, that's 3+ for the Race Track and 4+ for most Quadrilla sets that state one.
- Marble run or blocks? Marble runs are for a kid who wants something to happen after the build. Blocks are for a kid who wants to build and keep building.
- Complete set before add-ons. The Luge and the marble bag come second.
- Space. A marble run tower needs a flat, steady floor or table and room around it for the marbles that escape.
Lucho's take, straight from the shop: "A marble that won't roll is telling you the floor isn't level. Check the floor before you rebuild the tower." That's shop advice. It works in a living room too.
Setting up a marble run at home
A marble run is a build that gets tested every few seconds, so where you build it matters.
A hard, level surface. A table or a bare floor. A rug tips the base, and a tipped base sends marbles off the side. Kitchen tables work well until dinner. Pick a spot the run can keep for a day or two.
Room to catch. Leave space at the bottom for the marbles to land and stop. A shallow tray or a box lid at the finish saves a lot of crawling.
Build the base wide. Taller towers need a wider footprint. If the set comes with suggested designs, build a few of those first. They show how the pieces are meant to stack, and inventing your own goes better after that.
Count in, count out. Count the marbles before the first run and again when the run comes down. It turns cleanup into a game and keeps marbles where small children can't reach them.
Our rule is that the person who builds the run gets the first marble. Nobody else gets one until the builder says the track is open. It's the only traffic law in the house that nobody tries to repeal.
Gift notes
- Turning 3: the Marble Run Race Track 81 Pieces, the one Hape marble run in our data that states 3+. Or a wooden block set that states a younger starting age.
- Turning 4: a complete Quadrilla set that states 4+. Vertigo and the Stack Track Bucket Box are the bigger ones; Sonic Playground and Mega Skatepark are small.
- Already owns Quadrilla: The Luge Add-On Set or the bag of 50 marbles, once you've checked the listing for what it joins.
- A toddler: the Maple Wood Building Blocks 50 Pieces or the Montessori Stacking Blocks, both listed from age 1.
- A toddler and an older sibling: one of the Hape x The Met block sets, listed 2 to 8.
Hape marble runs vs other marble runs
Wooden marble runs aren't the only kind. Marble Genius and HABA have their own marble run pages, and CONNETIX makes ball-run packs from magnetic tiles. The marble runs page compares sets across makers by stated age and pieces.
We don't claim any Hape marble run fits another brand's system. Marble run sets from different makers can use different track shapes and sizes. If you plan to mix, read each listing.
Marble and small-parts safety
Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3.
Marbles are small balls, and the CPSC says some toys with small parts, small balls or marbles must carry a choking-hazard warning. Count the marbles before the run goes back in the box, and keep marble runs away from children under 3, even when an older sibling is playing.
Who should skip Hape
Skip a Quadrilla set for a child under its stated age. For a 3-year-old, the Race Track is the Hape marble run in our data that fits.
Skip the add-ons as a first purchase. They add to a run. They don't make one.
And skip a marble run for a house with a baby crawling nearby and no space to set the run up out of reach. The wooden blocks from age 1 are the Hape sets for that house.
Build the tower, roll one marble, then count them all back in the bag.

Questions about Hape
What is Hape Quadrilla?
Quadrilla is Hape's marble run line. In our data it includes complete sets like Vertigo 134-Piece, Super Spirals, Cliffhanger and the Stack Track Bucket Box 90 Piece, smaller sets like Sonic Playground and Mega Skatepark, a Basic Coding Set, and add-ons such as The Luge and a bag of 50 marbles.
What age is the Hape marble run for?
Most Quadrilla listings that state an age in our data say 4+: Vertigo, Sonic Playground, Cliffhanger, Mega Skatepark, Super Spirals and the Stack Track Bucket Box. The Hape Marble Run Race Track 81 Pieces, outside the Quadrilla name, lists 3+. Some Hape marble run listings don't state an age.
Do Quadrilla add-ons need a base set?
The Luge Add-On Set and the Marble Racers Add-On Bag of 50 Marbles are sold as add-ons, as their names say. Read each listing for what it's meant to join. We don't claim fit between sets beyond what the listings state. A complete set first, then add-ons, is the safer order.
What Hape blocks are there?
In our data Hape's block sets include the Maple Wood Building Blocks 50 Pieces (1+), the Grow-with-Me 80-Piece Wooden Building Blocks (1 to 6), the 100 PCs Wooden Building Block Set, the Railway Bucket Builder Set, two Hape x The Met art block sets (2 to 8) and toddler stackers like the Montessori Stacking Blocks (1 to 5).
How long has Hape been making toys?
Hape's global website says the company has been making toys since 1986. It also mentions toys made with bamboo and biomass plastic. We don't add other company history beyond what that page states.
