Candyland Game: Rules, History and Editions
The Candyland game is a color-matching race for 2 to 4 players, ages 3+ on Hasbro's box: draw a card or a candy token, move your mover to the next space of that color, and be first to the castle at the end of the path. No reading, no math, no strategy. The editions on Amazon US run from the classic board to themed boxes and a giant floor version. It is the one game in our house where nobody has ever blamed a bad move, because there aren't any.

What’s in this listEditions and versions of Candyland sold on Amazon US, matched by the name on the listing. Players, age and play time come from the box or listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
What the Candyland game is
Candy Land is a race along a winding path of colored spaces. Each player has a mover at the start. On your turn you draw a card, or in the newest edition a candy token, and move to the next space that matches its color. The first mover to reach the castle at the end wins.
That's all there is to it, and that is the point. You never choose a move. The draw decides. A 3-year-old can play on equal terms with a grandparent, because the only skills the game asks for are naming colors and taking turns.
Here are the box facts from Hasbro's two current rulebooks:
- Classic Candy Land (A4813): 2 to 4 players, ages 3+, gingerbread movers, a deck of color cards, picture spaces, Licorice spaces and shortcuts
- Candy Land 2025 Edition (G1726): 2 to 4 players, ages 3+, 10 minutes on the box, 4 Sweet Scout movers, 50 cardstock candy tokens in a drawstring pouch, and a second, cooperative way to play
- Reading needed: none in either
It's a competitive race in the classic rules. The 2025 box adds a team mode, which I'll get to below.
How Candy Land plays
The rules below are in my own words, from two Hasbro rulebooks: the classic Candy Land playbook (product code A4813) and the Candy Land Board Game 2025 Edition rulebook (G1726). They're the same race underneath. The 2025 box swaps the card deck for a pouch of tokens and adds a team game.
Setup
- Put every mover on the start space.
- Shuffle the cards face down, or shake the tokens in the pouch.
- The youngest player goes first. Both rulebooks say so.
Setup takes less time than finding a chair the right height. The 2025 rulebook adds one first-time job for an adult: press the cardboard tokens out of their sheet and throw the sheet away.
A turn in the classic game
- Draw the top card.
- Find the next space ahead of you that matches the card's color, and move there.
- Play passes to the next player.
The playbook keeps it at that. The 2025 rulebook spells out double draws and special tokens, below.
The A4813 playbook names a few spaces worth knowing:
- Picture spaces: named stops along the path, like Peppermint Forest, Licorice Lagoon and Lollipop Palace
- Shortcuts: short paths the playbook says your mover might take
- Licorice spaces: land on one and you could lose your next turn
The playbook makes a kind point about Licorice: it's fine to miss a turn, and you can watch where the others land while you wait. That's the most patient sentence in my game closet.
The game ends when the first mover reaches King Kandy's Castle.
A turn in the 2025 Edition
The G1726 rulebook keeps the same race and changes what you draw:
- Without looking, pull one candy token from the pouch.
- Single candy: move to the next space of that color.
- Double candies: move to the next space of that color, then do it again.
- Sweet Treat: move forward or backward to the space that shows that treat.
- Set the token aside. Play passes to the left.
The 2025 rulebook answers the questions kids actually ask:
- Pouch empty? Put the tokens back in, except the Sweet Treats, which are used once per game.
- Someone already on your space? Move ahead to the next space of that color.
- Split path? Take the side that matches your color.
- Drew a Sweet Treat behind you? A younger player may skip the backward move, return the token and draw again.
It also prints an option for older players: draw two tokens and pick the one you want to use. That's the closest Candy Land has ever come to a decision.
The team game in the 2025 box
The 2025 rulebook adds a second way to play, called Sweety Bear and Soury Bear's Silly Spat. Everyone plays as one team. You put three of the Sweet Scout movers and a Gummy Twins mover on start. On your turn you draw and move any one Sweet Scout. If you draw a red token, the Gummy Twins move instead. The team wins if all three Sweet Scouts reach Candy Castle before the Gummy Twins do.
That's a real cooperative game for 3-year-olds, which is rarer than it should be. A loss is shared, so nobody at the table loses alone.
Teaching it to a 3-year-old
The 2025 rulebook has a short note for parents, and it's good advice for any edition. Ask your child to count the spaces out loud as the mover goes, name each color, make up a sound for each part of the board, or tell a story about the character they're playing. None of that changes the rules. It just gives a young player something to do between draws.
My own add, and it's a habit, not a rule: let the youngest player hold the deck or the pouch for everyone. A 3-year-old with a job sits still longer than a 3-year-old waiting. And say the color out loud with them every time. It turns every draw into a color quiz that the child gets to win.
How it ends
In the classic race, first to the castle wins. In the 2025 race, first to reach Queen Frostine at Candy Castle wins, and any color you draw lets you land there. In the team game, the castle needs any color except red.
Sam was 3 when he first drew a card that sent him almost back to the start. He cheered, because it meant he got to walk the whole rainbow again. That is the correct attitude, and I've never managed it myself.
Candy Land editions on Amazon US right now
Our data for this page lists 11 Candy Land editions and bundles on Amazon US as of October 2026. The table above shows what each listing states. A dash means the listing leaves the field out. Where the data counts two identical listings once, so does this page.
The classic board, in a few boxes
- Hasbro Candy Land Kingdom of Sweet Adventures. Ages 3+, no reading required, per the listing. Players aren't listed.
- Winning Moves Candy Land 65th Anniversary 1189. Ages 3+, 2 to 4 players, no reading required.
- WS Game Company Candy Land Vintage Bookshelf Edition. Ages 3+, 2 to 4 players, no reading required, with colors listed as the skill.
If you want the game exactly as Hasbro's rulebooks describe it, start here. Kingdom of Sweet Adventures is the Hasbro listing in this group; the other two come from Winning Moves and WS Game Company.
Themed editions
Each of these uses the Candy Land race with its own theme, named as on the listing:
- Hasbro Candy Land Bluey Edition: ages 3+, 2 to 6 players
- Hasbro Candy Land: The Elf on the Shelf: ages 3+, 2 to 4 players, 10 minutes and up
- Hasbro Candy Land Disney Princess Edition: ages 3+, 2 to 3 players
- Hasbro Candy Land Unicorn Edition: ages 3+, no reading required
- USAopoly Candy Land The Grinch: ages 5+, 2 to 4 players
- USAopoly Candy Land Strawberry Shortcake: ages 5+, 2 to 4 players, colors listed as the skill
Two numbers stand out. The Bluey Edition lists up to 6 players, the most in our data, so it's the one for a bigger family. The Disney Princess Edition tops out at 3. And the two USAopoly boxes list 5+, not 3+, so they aren't the pick for a 3- or 4-year-old, whatever the theme.
The giant floor version
- Spin Master Candy Land Giant Edition: 2 to 4 players, colors listed as the skill. The listing doesn't give an age.
A giant edition moves the game from the table to the floor. Kids can stand on the path or sit around it. Measure the floor first. The listing doesn't give dimensions, so I can't do that part for you.
Bundles
- Hasbro Chutes & Ladders + Candy Land Bundle: two games in one listing. The listing gives no players or age, so check each box's own label when it arrives.
Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3, and movers and tokens are small parts.
Which Candy Land fits your table
I'll keep this to the listing facts, because Candy Land doesn't need an opinion. It needs the right box.
- A first game for a 3-year-old: Kingdom of Sweet Adventures, the 65th Anniversary edition or the Vintage Bookshelf Edition, all 3+
- More than 4 players: the Bluey Edition, listed for 2 to 6
- Just two or three players: the Disney Princess Edition lists 2 to 3
- A 5-year-old who wants a theme: The Grinch or Strawberry Shortcake, both 5+
- Floor play with room to move: the Giant Edition
- Two first games in one order: the Chutes & Ladders bundle
If you want the team game, look for Hasbro's 2025 Edition rules. The listings in our data don't say which ones include that mode, so check the box or Hasbro's instructions page before counting on it.
A small house rule we use, and it's ours, not Hasbro's: the player who wins shuffles for the next game. It keeps the winner busy, and it keeps the next game coming.
Who should skip Candy Land
Skip it if your youngest player already asks for choices on their turn. Candy Land never gives one, outside the two-token option for older players in the 2025 rulebook. Skip it too if adults are the main players. With no decisions, a grown-up game night is a very short evening.
And skip any edition for a child under its listed age. Most say 3+. The Grinch and Strawberry Shortcake say 5+. The number on the box is the floor, not a suggestion.
If you like Candy Land, look at these
Pages picked by what they share with Candy Land: a starting age of 3 to 4, no reading and a short race.
- Chutes and Ladders: a counting race with ups and downs
- Hi Ho Cherry-O: a spinner, a tree and simple counting
- Snakes and Ladders: the board-game cousin of Chutes and Ladders
- Hungry Hungry Hippos: fast, loud and no reading

Candy Land began at Milton Bradley and is published today by Hasbro. See the Hasbro and Milton Bradley brand pages for the rest of each lineup.
Shuffle the deck well. The castle is only as far as the next card.

Questions people ask
Who invented Candy Land?
Eleanor Abbott. The Strong National Museum of Play says she had polio and came up with the game to give children recovering from the disease something to do. Milton Bradley brought it out in 1949. The game was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2005.
When was Candy Land invented?
The Strong National Museum of Play says Eleanor Abbott developed the idea in the early 1940s, and Milton Bradley released the game in 1949. So the idea came first and the box came later. Several Candy Land listings in our data, including a 65th Anniversary edition from Winning Moves, refer back to that long run.
What age is Candy Land for?
Hasbro's classic and 2025 Candy Land boxes both say ages 3+. Most editions in our data list 3+ too. Two USAopoly editions, The Grinch and Strawberry Shortcake, list 5+. The game needs no reading, which is why it starts so young. Under 3, small pieces like movers and tokens are a choking hazard.
Who makes Candy Land?
Hasbro. The Strong museum notes that Milton Bradley, the original publisher, is now part of Hasbro. Hasbro publishes the classic board and its own themed editions. In our data, USAopoly, Winning Moves, WS Game Company and Spin Master also sell Candy Land editions under the Candy Land name.
Is there a Candy Land Frozen edition?
Not among the editions listed on Amazon US in our data right now, so we can't point you to a current box. The themed editions we do see include Bluey, The Elf on the Shelf, The Grinch, Strawberry Shortcake, Disney Princess and a Unicorn Edition, each named as it appears on its listing.
