Hungry Hungry Hippos Game: Rules, Editions and Ages
The Hungry Hungry Hippos game is a fast marble game for 2 to 4 players, ages 4+ on Hasbro's box: everyone works a lever, and the hippo that gobbles the most marbles wins. There's no reading, no turns to wait for and almost no setup. Six versions are listed on Amazon US right now, from the classic board to a travel bundle. It is also the loudest box in my closet, and I have a closet with a buzzer game in it.

What’s in this listEditions and versions of Hungry Hungry Hippos sold on Amazon US, matched by the name on the listing. Players, age and play time come from the box or listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
What the Hungry Hungry Hippos game is
Hungry Hungry Hippos is an action game for small kids. Four plastic hippos sit around a round pond. Marbles roll into the middle. Each player presses a lever, and their hippo stretches its neck out and snaps its mouth shut. Whatever marbles it catches, it keeps. When the pond is empty, the player with the most marbles wins.
That's it. No cards, no board path, no dice. Hasbro's older rule sheet says the object in one short sentence: make your hippo gobble the most marbles. The game is mostly reflexes and noise, and the rulebook doesn't pretend otherwise.
Here are the box facts, from Hasbro's two full-size rule sheets and instructions pages:
- Players: 2 to 4
- Ages: 4+
- Contents: a game base or game unit, 4 hippos, 20 marbles (the newer box adds a marble storage case)
- Type: competitive; everyone plays at the same time
- Reading needed: none
- Expansion: none listed; every box is a complete game
Hasbro doesn't print a play time on either rule sheet we read, and the listings in our data don't give one, so I won't guess. A round ends when the last marble is gone.
Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3. Every Hasbro rule sheet we read warns that the game contains marbles and is not for children under 3.
How Hungry Hungry Hippos plays
There are two Hasbro rule sheets for the full-size game, and they play a little differently. Below, in my own words, are both: the Elefun and Friends sheet (product code 05297, dated 2008) and the current refresh (product code F8815, dated 2024).
The older rule sheet: one marble at a time
The 05297 sheet starts with some assembly. You click the marble launchers and the hippos into the base, fit the heads on, and stick on the name and eye labels. Then each player picks a hippo and puts 5 marbles in the release area to its right.
- The youngest player goes first and presses their launcher to roll one marble into the pond.
- Everyone presses their hippo's tail as fast as they can to try to gobble that marble.
- Once it's caught, the next player to the left launches one marble, and everyone chomps again.
- When all the marbles are gone, each player counts the marbles in their hippo's collecting area. Most marbles wins.
This version has a rhythm to it: launch, chomp, launch, chomp. It's the closest the game comes to taking turns. The same sheet also lists an advanced game where everybody launches all their marbles at the same time, which is about what you'd picture.
My favorite part of this rule sheet is a section called, more or less, what to do if your hippo has lost its head. It explains how to clip the head back on and how to reattach a neck. I have never seen a rulebook admit so plainly that the pieces will be tested hard.
The current rule sheet: everybody at once
The F8815 refresh is built around a single game unit. There's no assembly in the rule sheet, just a few steps to get ready:
- Each player picks a hippo.
- Open the marble storage case and take out the marbles.
- Put an equal number of marbles in the trough to the right of each hippo.
- Pull back the black lever on each hippo.
Then the round starts. The player whose birthday comes next yells "go." Everyone presses the marble lever in their hippo's color to send marbles into the pond, and works the black lever to make their hippo chomp. Keep going until every marble has been gobbled.
To finish, each player releases their caught marbles one at a time with their marble lever and counts them out loud. One marble in the box is golden and counts as two. The most points wins.
The rule sheet names the four hippos, too: Hungry Potamus, Sweetie Potamus, Bottomless Potamus and Berry Potamus. If your house argues about who gets which color, the names give the argument somewhere to go.
What changes between the two
- Pace. The older sheet releases one marble per launch, so there are short pauses. The refresh sends marbles in nonstop until the pond is empty.
- Scoring. The refresh has the golden marble worth two. The older sheet counts every marble the same.
- Setup. The older sheet has real assembly the first time. The refresh is mostly open the case and pull back the levers.
- Storage. The refresh has a marble case that clips into the game unit. Hasbro's page for it says the chomped marbles reload into each trough, so a second round starts fast.
Either way, the game takes about as long to explain as it takes to pour juice. That's why it's a "first game, not best game" for a lot of families. Nobody needs to know what a turn is yet.
How it ends, and how to keep it fair
Both sheets end the same way: the pond is empty, and you count. Ties aren't covered in either rule sheet. In our house the tie-breaker is a rematch, which is a house rule, not Hasbro's, and one that nobody under 10 has ever voted against.
Lucho's take: "Twenty marbles go in the box. Count twenty before the lid goes on." He's right, and the count matters for more than the score. Loose marbles on the floor are a choking hazard for younger brothers and sisters who are under 3.
Hungry Hungry Hippos editions on Amazon US right now
Our data for this page lists 6 Hungry Hungry Hippos versions on Amazon US as of October 2026, all from Hasbro. The table above shows what each listing states. Where a listing leaves out the age or player count, the table shows a dash.
The full-size game
- Hungry Hungry Hippos. The standard Hasbro board. The listing says 2 to 4 players, ages 4+, and an action game with marbles.
- Hungry Hungry Hippos Instant Marble Relaunch. The listing name adds "Instant Marble Relaunch, Easy Set-Up and Storage." It lists 2 to 4 players and ages 4+. That description matches Hasbro's page for the current refresh, with marbles that reload into the troughs and a storage case.
- Elefun and Friends Hungry Hungry Hippos. This is the name on Hasbro's older 05297 rule sheet. The listing itself doesn't give the age or player count. Hasbro's instructions page for that version says 2 to 4 players and ages 4+.
If you want the game as the current rule sheet describes it, start with the Instant Marble Relaunch listing. If you grew up with the version you had to snap together, the Elefun and Friends name is the one tied to that sheet.
Themed editions
- Hungry Hungry Hippos Dino Edition. The listing says 2 to 4 players, ages 4+, and the same marble action.
- Hungry Hungry Hippos Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Edition. The listing says 2 to 4 players and marble action. The listing name says ages 4 and up.
The listings for both themed editions describe the same marble-gobbling game. What tells them apart is the theme named on the box, not the rules. If the kid you're shopping for already owns plain Hippos, a themed box is the reason to buy a second one. If they don't, the plain game does the same job.
The travel bundle
- Grab and Go Bundle (4 Pack). The listing name says it bundles four Grab and Go travel games: Battleship, Connect 4, Guess Who? and Hungry Hungry Hippos. It lists 2 players and ages 7+.
Hasbro's own instructions page for the Hungry Hungry Hippos Grab and Go game describes 2 chomping hippos and a plastic cover that keeps the marbles from rolling out. The bundle listing is 7+ for the set, so on this site that's the age we go by for the bundle. For a 4- to 6-year-old, stay with the full-size boards above.
Who the Hungry Hungry Hippos game suits
The game works best for a table where at least one player is 4 to 7 and nobody minds noise. A few quick matches, from the box facts:
- A first game for a 4-year-old. No reading, no counting spaces, and the rules fit in one breath.
- A mixed table with grown-ups. Adults and kids press levers at the same speed, more or less. Experience doesn't help much.
- A birthday party with four kids. Four hippos, four seats, and a round over before anyone gets restless.
- Siblings who argue about turns. Everyone plays at once, so there's no turn to argue about.
Sam is 7 now and has noticed that the golden marble in the newer box is worth two. He no longer watches the pond. He watches the gold. I'd call it strategy if it worked more often.
Who should skip Hungry Hungry Hippos
Skip it if the youngest player in the house is under 3, or if one is often around. The marbles are a choking hazard, and the rule sheets and listings say so. A house with a crawling baby needs a game without loose small pieces.
Skip it, too, if your group wants decisions. There's no strategy beyond pressing fast and maybe aiming at the gold. Once a kid wants a real choice on their turn, it's time to add a game that gives them one.
And skip it for a quiet evening. Four hippos snapping at once is loud. That's not a flaw. It's the game.

Questions people ask
How do you play Hungry Hungry Hippos?
Each player picks a hippo and gets an equal share of the marbles. Marbles roll into the middle, and everyone presses their hippo's lever to make it chomp. When every marble is gobbled, players count what their hippo caught, and the most marbles wins. In Hasbro's current rule sheet (F8815), the golden marble counts as two.
What age is Hungry Hungry Hippos for?
Ages 4+ on Hasbro's box and on the classic, Dino Edition and Instant Marble Relaunch listings in our data. Every Hasbro rule sheet we read carries a choking-hazard warning: the game contains marbles and is not for children under 3. The Grab and Go bundle that includes a hippos game is listed at 7+, and that's the age we go by for the bundle.
How many marbles come with Hungry Hungry Hippos?
Both full-size Hasbro rule sheets we read list 20 marbles. The current refresh (F8815) includes one golden marble among them that's worth two points, plus a marble storage case. The older Elefun and Friends sheet (05297) lists 20 plastic marbles and has players start with 5 each in a four-player game. Count them before the box closes.
How many players can play Hungry Hungry Hippos?
The full-size board has four hippos, and every full-size listing in our data that states a count says 2 to 4 players. With two players, two hippos sit empty, and the rule sheets still work. The travel version on Hasbro's instructions page has 2 hippos and is listed for 2 players.
What is the Instant Marble Relaunch version?
It's the version whose listing name says Instant Marble Relaunch, Easy Set-Up and Storage. Hasbro's instructions page for its current full-size game (F8815) says chomped marbles reload into each hippo's trough, so you can start again right away, and the marbles store in a case that clips into the game unit.
