Sequence Game: How It Plays, the Editions and Sequence Letters

The Sequence game is a card-and-board game from Goliath for 2 to 12 players, ages 7+: play a card from your hand, put a chip on the matching space on the board, and try to get five chips in a row. Jacks are wild. Amazon US has a Premium Edition, a Luxury Edition with a roll-flat mat, an On-the-Go travel set, a Jacks Go Wild expansion and Sequence Letters for ages 4 to 7. It's the rare game where 12 people fit at one board, as long as some of them are fine reading cards upside down.

What’s in this listEditions and versions of Sequence sold on Amazon US, matched by the name on the listing. Players, age and play time come from the box or listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What the Sequence game is

Sequence is part card game, part board game. The board shows playing cards laid out in a grid. On your turn, you play a card from your hand and put one of your chips on the matching space on the board. Five of your chips in a row is a Sequence. Get enough Sequences before the other side does, and you win.

You can also block the other side, and you can take their chips off the board. Jacks are wild. That's most of the game in five sentences.

I need to be clear about where those sentences come from. I looked for Goliath's rulebook for Sequence on its own site and couldn't find one to read. Goliath's product pages say the full instructions come in the box, but they don't post them. So everything on this page about how Sequence plays comes from Goliath's product pages and from the Amazon US listings in our data. I'm not going to fill gaps from memory or from other people's summaries. Where the pages stop, I stop, and I'll tell you where that is.

The box facts, from Goliath's page for the classic Sequence game:

How Sequence plays, from Goliath's pages

A turn

Goliath's pages describe a turn simply. Play a card from your hand. Find a matching space on the board. Put one of your chips there. When you have five in a row, it's a Sequence.

Every card in your hand points to a spot on the board, so a turn is a quick choice: which of your cards puts a chip where it helps you most, or hurts the other side most?

Blocking and removing chips

Goliath's pages say you can block opponents and remove their chips. Blocking is the part anyone can see right away: if the other side has four in a row, putting your chip on the fifth space stops it. The pages don't explain which cards let you remove a chip or when. That's in the instructions in the box.

Jacks

The pages say jacks are wild, and that's the only detail they give. It makes the jack the most powerful card in the deck and the least explained one on the website. Read the rule sheet before your first game so nobody at the table is guessing what a jack does.

Winning

Each player or team tries to complete the required number of Sequences before the other side. Goliath's pages don't say how many that is. The number is in the box's rules, and it's the one thing to read aloud before the first card is played.

What the pages don't say

To keep it honest, here's what I couldn't confirm from Goliath's pages: the hand size, how many Sequences you need to win, how chip removal works, whether any spaces are special, and how teams sit. All of that is in the instructions that come in the box. The listings in our data don't add those details either.

Sequence editions on Amazon US right now

Our data lists five Sequence listings on Amazon US as of October 2026, all from Goliath. The table above shows players and age where each listing states them; a dash means it doesn't. Here's what tells them apart.

Sequence Premium Edition

The Premium Edition lists ages 7+, 2 to 12 players, a deluxe edition. The listing names a 20.25 x 26.25 in game board, chips and cards. Goliath's page for it adds a premium deck of cards, a card storage box and 135 marker chips: 50 green, 50 blue and 35 red. That's a bigger board than the classic folding board on Goliath's page, which measures 19.75 x 15.25 in.

If you want the classic game on a bigger board, this is the listing with the board size spelled out.

Sequence Luxury Edition

The Luxury Edition lists ages 7+, 2 to 12 players, a deluxe edition. The listing names a cushioned roll-flat game mat, marker chips, a card storage box and a deck of cards. A mat instead of a folding board is the difference here. The listing doesn't give the mat's size, so check the photos if you're planning around a particular table.

Sequence On-the-Go

The On-the-Go set lists ages 7+, 2 to 12 players, and is listed as the travel edition. The listing names a canvas travel bag, a neoprene game board, 104 cards and 135 marker chips. That's the same chip count as the classic box on Goliath's page, in a bag instead of a box. For a cabin or a camping table, this is the one built for the trip.

Sequence: Jacks Go Wild Expansion Pack

This is an expansion, and the listing says it needs Sequence. It lists ages 7+, 2 to 12 players, 52 Wild Jacks cards, 19 Wild Jacks chips and an instruction manual. The listing doesn't explain the new rules, and I won't guess them. What the component list tells you is that the expansion brings its own deck and its own chips, so it changes the game rather than just adding to it. Get the base game to the table first, and add this when your group knows the jacks by heart.

Sequence Letters

Sequence Letters, listed as by Jax, is for ages 4 to 7 and 2 to 4 players, and tagged for letters and reading. It's a different game built on the same idea. Goliath's page describes it this way:

With two or three players, everyone plays alone. With four, you can play as two teams. Goliath's page lists a game board, 52 cards and 68 chips in three colors, and a play time of 0 to 20 minutes.

It's the only Sequence in our data for kids under 7, and it's the one I'd hand a kid who's working on letter sounds. The reading part is the game, not a chore stuck onto one.

Which Sequence fits your table

A few quick matches, from the listings:

Teams: the way into Sequence

My one opinion for this page: play your first game of Sequence in teams of two. Goliath's pages say the game works for individuals or teams, and the classic box comes with chips in only three colors. Any group bigger than three is already playing in teams, so you may as well learn it that way. A partner also means someone to check your card before you play the wrong one.

Some table tips that follow from the box facts:

A house rule some families use, and it is a house rule: let the youngest player on each team hold the cards and the oldest place the chips for the first few turns. It keeps everybody busy.

Who should skip Sequence

Skip it if your group wants a game with no luck. The cards you draw decide which spaces you can reach, and a good plan can wait a long time for the right card.

Skip the classic editions for kids under 7. Every classic Sequence listing in our data starts at 7+. For ages 4 to 7, Sequence Letters is the one to look at.

Skip it too if you want a game you can learn entirely from a website. The rules come in the box, and that's the only place I could find them.

All Sequence editions use small chips. Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3.

Questions people ask

How many players can play Sequence?

Goliath's product pages for Sequence and Sequence Premium Edition say 2 to 12 players, playing as individuals or teams. The Premium, Luxury, On-the-Go and Jacks Go Wild listings in our data all say 2 to 12. The box comes with chips in three colors, so bigger groups play in teams. Sequence Letters is the exception: 2 to 4 players.

How long does a game of Sequence take?

Goliath's product page for the classic Sequence game lists 20 to 40 minutes. The listings in our data don't state a play time for the Premium, Luxury or On-the-Go editions. Sequence Letters, the kids' version, lists 0 to 20 minutes on Goliath's page.

What is Sequence Letters?

Sequence Letters is Goliath's alphabet version, listed for ages 4 to 7 and 2 to 4 players. Per Goliath's page, each card shows a letter in upper and lower case. You say the letter's sound, then cover a picture on the board that starts with that sound. Cards with X or Z are wild. The first player to get four chips in a row wins.

What age is Sequence for?

The classic Sequence game is listed for ages 7+ on Goliath's pages and on the Premium, Luxury, On-the-Go and Jacks Go Wild listings in our data. For younger kids, Sequence Letters is listed for ages 4 to 7. Every edition comes with chips, which are small parts, so keep them away from children under 3.

Is there a Sequence dice game or a states and capitals version?

Goliath's site lists a Sequence Dice game, and Sequence states and capitals is a search people make, but neither is among the editions listed on Amazon US in our data right now. Our data covers the Premium, Luxury and On-the-Go editions, the Jacks Go Wild expansion and Sequence Letters.
