Hedbanz Game: How It Plays and the Editions
The Hedbanz game is a picture-guessing game from Spin Master: you wear a headband with a card you can't see, and you ask yes-or-no questions until you figure out what's on your own forehead. The Hedbanz Family Game listing says 2 to 6 players, ages 6+. It's the one game where everyone at the table knows something about you that you don't, and they are delighted about it.

What the Hedbanz game is
Hedbanz is a picture-guessing party game made by Spin Master. Every player wears a headband with a picture card clipped to the front. You can't see your own card. Everyone else can. On your turn you ask yes-or-no questions to work out what you're wearing: an animal, a food, a thing. Guess it right and you're closer to winning.
It's a simple idea, and that's the point. There's no board to learn, no reading on the cards beyond the picture, and a turn takes as long as the timer.
The box facts, from the listings in our data and Spin Master's product pages:
- Players: 2 to 6 on the Hedbanz Family Game listing and Spin Master's 2023 Edition page
- Ages: 6+ on the Family Game listing and the 2023 Edition page; 7+ on the plain Hedbanz listing
- Play time: none of the listings in our data state one
- Mode: competitive, every player for themselves
- Expansion: none of the listings in our data are marked as expansions
Spin Master's page for the 2023 Edition lists 6 headbands, 6 headplates, 16 scoring badges, 1 timer, 69 picture cards and 3 sample question cards. Its other Hedbanz page lists 6 headbands, 13 scoring badges, 69 picture cards, 3 sample question cards and 1 timer. So the counts differ a little between versions, and the picture card count stays at 69 in both.
How Hedbanz plays
A plain note first. We couldn't open a Hedbanz instruction sheet from Spin Master for this page. So this section sticks to what Spin Master's own product pages say about play, and what the listings show. Where I add advice, I'll say it's advice, not a rule. Your box will come with its own instructions, and those win.
What Spin Master's pages say
From the publisher's 2023 Edition page and its Hedbanz picture-guessing page, in my own words:
- Each player picks a headband and puts it on.
- Each player takes a picture card and slots it into their headband without looking at it, so everyone else can see the picture.
- On your turn, flip the timer.
- Ask yes-or-no questions to figure out what's on your card, until you get it or the timer runs out.
- Win by being the first player to guess 3 cards correctly. The other Spin Master page describes the same goal as being first to collect three scoring badges.
That's the loop. One player asks, everyone else answers, the sand runs. Then it's the next player's turn.
What the turn feels like
The turn is short and loud. You ask "Am I an animal?" and five people say yes at once, some of them too fast. Then "Do I live on a farm?" and the table splits, because one cousin thinks a duck lives on a farm and another thinks a duck lives wherever it wants. Hedbanz doesn't settle those arguments. It just keeps the timer running.
Wearing the card is the strange part. It's a bit like walking around with something in your teeth, except everyone is allowed to stare and nobody is allowed to tell you.
June has never once kept a straight face while someone guessed close to her card. She doesn't say a word. She doesn't have to. We've talked about it. She says she's working on it. The evidence says otherwise.
The 3 sample question cards
Both of Spin Master's pages list 3 sample question cards in the box. They're there because the hardest part of Hedbanz is the first question. A new player, especially a young one, freezes, sees five faces grinning at them, and says "Am I... a thing?"
My one opinion for this page: put the sample question cards in the middle of the table for every game with a new player, not just the first one. The listing says they're in the box, they cost nothing to use, and they turn a frozen kid into a kid with a plan.
Questions that work
None of this is a rule. It's how a good Hedbanz turn tends to go.
- Start wide. Animal, food or thing? One question cuts the deck into a much smaller group.
- Then size. "Am I bigger than a chair?" works for almost every card.
- Then where. Kitchen, outside, school, water. Places narrow things fast.
- Then guess. When you've got two or three options left, name one. Check your box's instructions for what a wrong guess costs; the product pages don't say.
The trap is asking about one specific thing too early. "Am I a narwhal?" on your second question is a long shot, unless the headband you picked is the narwhal one and you're feeling lucky.
Setting up the room
A few practical things, none of them rules, all of them learned from party games in general:
- Sit in a circle, not a line. Every player needs to see every card. A couch with everyone facing the TV is the wrong shape.
- Count the pieces before guests arrive. Spin Master's pages list 69 picture cards and either 13 or 16 scoring badges, depending on the version. A quick count tells you if the last party walked off with any.
- Fit the headbands first. Kids and adults share the same bands, so adjust them before the first turn, not during it.
- Keep the timer where the asker can't knock it over. Excited hands and a sand timer don't mix well.
- Pick a judge for "sort of." Somebody will ask a question that's half yes and half no. Decide in advance who settles it, so the timer doesn't run out during the debate.
House rules some tables use
These aren't from Spin Master. They're common ways families tweak a party game for their table. Label them, agree on them before you start, and don't spring them mid-game.
- No timer for the youngest. A 6-year-old gets as long as they need. Everyone else still flips the sand.
- One silly answer per game. Each player gets one chance to answer "sort of" instead of yes or no. Use it well.
- Teams of two. With more people than headbands, pair up. One partner wears the card, the other one whispers the next question.
Hedbanz editions on Amazon US right now
Our data for this page lists 4 Hedbanz listings on Amazon US as of October 2026, all from Spin Master. The table above shows what each listing states. Where a listing leaves a field out, you'll see a dash. Here's what tells them apart.
Hedbanz Family Game
Hedbanz Family Game (Spin Master) is listed at 2 to 6 players, ages 6+, not an expansion. It's the listing in our data with the most complete box facts, and its player range matches the 2023 Edition page on Spin Master's site.
If you want one copy for the house and you have kids around 6, start with this one.
Hedbanz (the plain box)
Hedbanz (Spin Master) is listed at ages 7+ and tagged as a family game. The listing in our data doesn't state a player count. It's the same game idea under the plain name. The age line is the main difference you can see from the data: 7+ here against 6+ on the Family Game listing.
Hedbanz 3rd Edition
Hedbanz 3rd Edition (Spin Master) is the third listing. Our data has no player count, age or play time for it, only the edition name. Read the listing's photos and description before you buy, so you know which headbands and cards are inside.
Hedbanz Harry Potter Wizarding World 2022 Edition
Hedbanz Harry Potter Wizarding World 2022 Edition (Spin Master) is listed at 2 to 4 players, with no age in our data. That's a smaller player range than the Family Game's 2 to 6, so check your group size before you pick it. The listing names the edition and the theme. It's filed as a card game in our data.
For a household that already knows that theme, the cards will be easier to guess from. For everyone else, the plain Family Game is the safer pick.
Which Hedbanz box fits your table
A few quick matches, from the listings:
- A family of up to six with a 6-year-old: Hedbanz Family Game, 2 to 6 players, 6+
- A group with kids 7 and up: the plain Hedbanz box works too, at 7+
- A small group that knows the theme: the Harry Potter Wizarding World 2022 Edition, at 2 to 4 players
- A replacement for an old copy: compare the 3rd Edition listing's contents with what you're missing
The headband choices change between versions. Spin Master's 2023 Edition page lists a dino, a narwhal, a robot, a flower, a butterfly and a brain. I'd take the brain headband every time. Not for strategy. For confidence.
Who should skip Hedbanz
Skip it if your group is just two people who want a real contest. Hedbanz works at 2 on the listings, but the fun is in a table full of people answering at once. Two-player guessing has better games, and our Guess Who page covers one of them.
Skip it if anyone at the table hates being the center of attention. Every turn puts one person on the spot with a picture on their head and a timer running.
Skip it for a child younger than the listed age. The Family Game says 6+, the plain box says 7+.
And skip it if your group wants a game that rewards planning. Hedbanz rewards quick questions and a good laugh. It's a warm-up for a game night, or the whole game night for a house with young kids. It isn't a strategy game, and it doesn't pretend to be.
If you like Hedbanz, look at these
Pages chosen by what they share with Hedbanz: guessing, quick turns and a bigger group.
- Charades: act it out instead of asking about it
- Catch Phrase: describe a word against a timer, in teams
- Party games: the wider shelf of games for a crowd
- Guess Who: yes-or-no questions, two players, faces instead of headbands

Is it Hedbanz or Headbanz?
Spin Master spells it Hedbanz, without the a, on its product pages and on every listing in our data. Headbanz is a common misspelling. If you search for Headbanz, check the maker on the listing so you know it's the Spin Master game and not a different headband guessing game.
Is there a Hedbanz Junior?
There's no Hedbanz Junior among the Hedbanz listings on Amazon US in our data for October 2026. The youngest age label in our data is 6+, on the Hedbanz Family Game listing. For a younger child, look at games listed for their age instead of buying up.
