Popular Board Games, Sorted by How Many People You Seat

These popular board games made the list for one reason: each box or listing states how many can play, the starting age and how long a game runs. No expansions, no resale copies, at most two games per publisher. I sorted all 20 by the group they seat, because that's the question I ask first. (I teach middle-school math. Sorting is how I relax. Dana says this explains a lot.)

How this list is builtComplete base games (no expansions, no vintage resale copies) whose listing or publisher states the player count, the starting age and the play time. At most two per publisher.

What "popular board games" means on this page

Here's the honest part first. I don't have sales charts. I can't tell you which game is the most popular in America, and I won't fake a top 10. What I can tell you is what each box says about itself.

So the rule is plain. Every game here is a complete base game, not an expansion and not a vintage resale copy. Each listing or publisher states three things: the player count, the starting age and the play time. No publisher gets more than two spots. That gave me 20 games, from a 15-minute tile game for ages 5+ to a 90-minute detective case for ages 14+.

Then I sorted them by group size. Not by brand, and not by how famous the name is. Group size is the first thing that decides whether a game works on your table. The rest follows.

Co-op games: the whole table against the box

Three games on this list are cooperative. Co-op means everyone wins or loses together, against the game itself. Nobody gloats, because there's nobody to gloat at.

I have a soft spot for co-op games, and a scar. One night in the garage, Marisol, Lucho and I lost the same cooperative game four times in a row. Around the third loss, Lucho proposed a house rule. Around the fourth, we all agreed the board had earned it and put the box away. Marisol wrote the final tally on a strip of label tape: "Board 4." She didn't add our score. She said it wasn't a measurement. The lesson stuck: a co-op game can beat a whole table, so pick one at the right age and length for your group.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases (Asmodee) lists 1 to 8 players, ages 14+ and 90 minutes. It's cooperative and lists a solo mode, so it works for one person on a quiet night or a full table on a Saturday. The 14+ label is the key fact. This one is for older teens and adults.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Baker Street Irregulars (Asmodee) lists the same numbers: 1 to 8 players, 14+, 90 minutes, cooperative, with a solo mode. If a group likes the first box, this is a second set of cases with the same frame. If nobody has tried either, start with one. Two 90-minute boxes are a lot of evenings to promise.

Scream Cooperative Board Game (Funko) lists 3 to 8 players, ages 13+ and 20 minutes, and the listing names the Scream line. It's the short co-op on this list. The trade-off is the minimum. It needs at least 3, so a couple at home can't open it alone.

More cases-and-clues games sit on our murder mystery games page.

Big-table games that list 8 or more players

These three list a high top number. Read the bottom number and the clock just as carefully.

Clue Master Detective (Winning Moves) lists 3 to 10 players, ages 10+ and 45 to 60 minutes. It's the highest player count on this page. Ten players isn't a game night anymore. That's a reunion with a board. The minimum is 3, and the starting age is 10, so check both before the holidays. Our Clue page covers the other Clue editions listed right now.

Monopoly The Mega Edition (Hasbro) lists 2 to 8 players, ages 8+ and 90 minutes. It seats a crowd and starts at 8, which makes it one of the easier big-group fits for a mixed-age table. The 90 minutes is the listed time. The box has never met my family. More editions are on our Monopoly page.

Rivers, Roads and Rails (Ravensburger) lists 1 to 8 players, ages 5+ and 15 minutes. It's listed as a family game with a solo mode. It has the youngest starting age on this list, and it's tied for the shortest play time. Sam is 7, and he has pointed out that it's one of only three games here he's cleared for by the label. He has a point, and he keeps making it.

Games for 2 to 6 players

This is the middle of the list, and the middle of most game closets. Eight games land here.

Wrath of Fire Mountain (Gamewright) lists 2 to 6 players, ages 10+ and 30 minutes, and it's listed as a strategy game. The components list is long: 44 cave people, 16 dinosaur figures, 7 dice, volcano map tiles, 16 dinosaur cards and 15 map tiles. That's a lot of pieces to count back into the box. Plan on a tray.

Monopoly Harry Potter Edition (Hasbro) lists 2 to 6 players, ages 8+ and 60 minutes. The listing names the Harry Potter line. Compared with the Mega Edition, it lists fewer seats and a shorter clock. For a family of four, that's the more useful trade.

King of Tokyo Power Up, New Edition (IELLO) lists 2 to 6 players, ages 10+ and 30 minutes. It's listed as a dice game. If your group runs from 2 to 6 depending on the week, this range covers all of it.

Stabbits (MindWare) lists 2 to 6 players, ages 8+ and 20 minutes. One detail to read before you count chairs: the components list names a game board, 4 rabbit pawns, 4 carrot tokens and a die. The listing still says up to 6 players, so check how it handles more than four before you plan on six.

Brilliant 23491 (Ravensburger) lists 1 to 6 players, ages 8+ and 20 minutes. It's a dice game with a solo mode. A game that works for one is a good thing to own in a house where the other players are asleep after a night shift.

HERSHEY'S S'mores Perfectly Toasted (Spin Master) lists 3 to 6 players, ages 6+ and 25 minutes. The listing names the Hershey's line. A 6+ start makes it one of three games here for a first-grader. The 3-player minimum is the catch.

Clue Bob's Burgers (USAopoly) lists 2 to 6 players, ages 8+ and 60 minutes. It's listed as a mystery game, and the listing names the Bob's Burgers line, 6 metal tokens, 21 rumor cards and a scoring pad. It's the only mystery game on this list that starts at 2.

Clue Scooby-Doo (USAopoly) lists 3 to 6 players, ages 8+ and 60 minutes, and the listing names the Scooby-Doo line. Same age and clock as the Bob's Burgers box, but it needs a third player. That one number decides which of the two fits your house.

The strategy board games page has more in this player range.

Small-table games for up to 4 or 5 players

These six top out at 4 or 5. That sounds like a limit. For a lot of homes, it's the whole group.

Qwixx (Gamewright) lists 2 to 5 players, ages 8+ and 15 minutes. It comes with 6 dice and 1 score pad, per the listing. It's tied for the shortest game on this page. A game this short is the one that actually gets played on a school night.

King of The Dice (HABA) lists 2 to 5 players, ages 8+ and 30 minutes. Short, 8+, and it stops at five. Our dice games page has more like it.

Mountains (HABA) lists 2 to 5 players, ages 8+ and 20 to 30 minutes. The components list is the most detailed on this page: a mountain board, 32 equipment cards, 62 hiking cards, a cloth bag, 80 favor stones, 5 summit books, a season pad and a summit stamp. It's the only game here with a stamp. I've already told my kids who's in charge of it. They've already appealed.

Machi Koro Life (Pandasaurus Games) lists 2 to 5 players, ages 10+ and 30 to 45 minutes. It's listed as a dice game. The 10+ start puts it with the older-kid games on this list.

Cascadia Junior (AEG) lists 2 to 4 players, ages 6+ and 30 minutes. It's a junior edition, per the listing. For a family of four with a 6- or 7-year-old, it fits on every count the box gives.

Funkoverse Game of Thrones 100 4-Pack (Funko) lists 2 to 4 players, ages 13+ and 20 to 60 minutes. The box has 2 playable maps and 4 Funkoverse game figures, and the listing names the Game of Thrones line. It's the only teen-and-up game here that tops out at 4.

Buy for your usual group size, not the biggest number on the box

This is the one opinion on the page, and you can check it against the list above.

The big number on a box is a ceiling. It isn't a promise that the game runs well at that size, and it says nothing about your Tuesday. On this list, six games list 8 or more players. Four of those six also list 45 minutes or more: Clue Master Detective at 45 to 60, Monopoly The Mega Edition at 90, and both Sherlock Holmes boxes at 90. Of the six games that stop at 4 or 5 players, four list 30 minutes or less.

The bottom number matters too. Four games here need at least 3 players. If your house is usually two adults after the kids are in bed, those four stay on the shelf most nights.

So count the people who show up on an ordinary week. Then pick a game whose range covers that number comfortably, not one built around the holiday crowd you see twice a year. If the big gathering matters, buy a second game for it. Two right-sized games beat one game that only fits December.

How to choose a board game from this list

Four checks, in the order I'd run them.

Start with the player range, both ends

Read the minimum first. A 3-player minimum rules out a two-person night. Then read the maximum against your normal group, not your biggest one. If your number sits in the middle of the range, you're in good shape.

Match the starting age to the youngest player

The age on the box is a starting point, and I never go below it. On this list, 1 game starts at 5, 2 start at 6, 9 start at 8, 4 start at 10, 2 start at 13 and 2 start at 14. June is 11. By the labels she's cleared for 16 of these 20. Sam is cleared for 3. June has done that math out loud more than once.

Fit the play time to your evening

The listed times here run from 15 minutes to 90. Five games list 20 minutes or less. Eight reach 60 minutes or more at the top of their range. A game that runs past bedtime gets abandoned, and an abandoned game is hard to get back to the table.

Decide between co-op and competitive

Three games here are cooperative. They suit a group where someone takes losing hard, or a table that likes to talk through a problem. The other 17 are competitive. Some tables need a winner. Mine does, mostly so somebody can ask for a rematch.

Find more picks for mixed ages on the family board games page, and big-group options on party games.

A note on small parts

Many of these games list small pieces in their components: dice, pawns, tokens, figures and stones. Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3, and the CPSC bans small parts in products meant for that age. If a toddler shares the house, store game boxes up high with the lids on.

Who should skip this list

Skip this page if you're shopping for a child under 5. Nothing here starts below 5, and most start at 8. Skip it too if you want expansions or add-ons for a game you already own. This list only covers complete base games. And if you came for a ranking of the greatest board games ever made, I don't have one. I have a folding table, a stack of listings and a firm belief that the right game is the one that fits the people sitting down tonight.

Set the table for the people who actually show up.

Questions people ask

What are the best board games of all time?

I can't rank that honestly. This site has no sales charts and no poll of every table in America, so this page doesn't claim a top 10. What it does: 20 complete games whose listings state players, starting age and play time. Start with your usual group size, check the starting age against the youngest player, then pick a play time your evening can hold.

What are good family board games for younger kids on this list?

By the labels, three games start below 8. Rivers, Roads and Rails lists ages 5+, 1 to 8 players and 15 minutes. HERSHEY'S S'mores Perfectly Toasted lists 6+ and 3 to 6 players. Cascadia Junior lists 6+, 2 to 4 players and 30 minutes. Nine more start at 8+. Never hand a game to a child younger than its listed starting age.

What are the best board games for adults here?

Four games list a starting age of 13 or 14. The two Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective boxes list 14+, 1 to 8 players and 90 minutes, and both are cooperative. Funko's Scream Cooperative Board Game lists 13+ and 20 minutes. Funkoverse Game of Thrones 100 lists 13+ and 2 to 4 players. A 13+ or 14+ label is a starting age, not an adults-only label.

Which of these board games work with only two players?

Sixteen of the 20 list 2 or fewer as the minimum. Four don't: Clue Master Detective and Funko's Scream game start at 3, and so do Clue Scooby-Doo and HERSHEY'S S'mores Perfectly Toasted. Four games also list 1 player: both Sherlock Holmes boxes, Rivers, Roads and Rails, and Brilliant.

Are any of these popular board games cooperative?

Three are, by their listings: Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Baker Street Irregulars, and Funko's Scream Cooperative Board Game. In a co-op game, everyone wins or loses together against the game. The other 17 are competitive, so somebody wins and somebody asks for a rematch.
