Kids Dirt Bikes: Gas and Electric, by the Maker's Limits
A kids dirt bike is a small off-road motorcycle, gas or electric, sized for a young rider. The ones we track on Amazon US run from electric bikes listed for ages 3–7 to bikes listed for 16+. The choice that matters is fit: your rider's age, weight and reach against the maker's limits, today. Most bikes I work on at the shop are taller than I am. The smallest ones here are shorter than my tool cart.

What’s in this listGas and electric kids' dirt bikes we track on Amazon US, highest stated rider weight limit first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
What a kids dirt bike is
A kids dirt bike is a small motorcycle built for dirt, not for the street. It has knobby tires, a throttle, brakes and either a small gas engine or a battery and motor. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation calls this whole family off-highway motorcycles, and its parents' guide opens with a line I agree with: they are not toys.
The table sorts every gas and electric kids' dirt bike we track on Amazon US by the rider weight limit on its listing, highest first. Bikes without a stated limit sit lower. That's a sort, not a ranking.
At our last check in October 2026, the bikes came from four makers: MotoTec, Razor, Hiboy and X-PRO. That's how the data landed. None of us on the loop has ridden these bikes. What follows is what each listing says, and where our data is thin, I say so instead of guessing.
Dirt bikes for kids: gas or electric
Both kinds are in the table.
Electric kids' dirt bikes have a battery and an electric motor. On this page, listed batteries run from 24 V to 72 V and motors from 300 W to 12,000 W. Some list the battery type: lithium-ion on all three Hiboy listings and many MotoTec ones, sealed lead-acid on the Razor MX500 and RSF650.
Gas kids' dirt bikes have a small engine. On this page, listed engines run from 40 cc on the MotoTec Demon to 125 cc on the MotoTec X3. In between: 49 cc and 50 cc 2-strokes, 52 cc 2-strokes, a 72 cc 4-stroke and 110 cc 4-strokes. The best 50cc dirt bikes page covers the 49–50 cc class on its own.
Here's the table version:
- Electric: no fuel, no exhaust, quieter, a charger and a charge wait
- Gas: fuel to store, an engine that runs outdoors only, no charge wait
- Both: the same helmet, gear, riding area and adult watching
2-stroke versus 4-stroke is the oldest argument at the shop. It has outlived two coffee makers. For a parent, the plain version is enough: a 2-stroke mixes oil into the fuel, a 4-stroke keeps the oil separate. Read the manual for which fuel mix, if any, the bike needs.
Mini dirt bikes, youth dirt bikes and teen bikes
By listed age, the bikes with an age in our data fall into three groups. Never buy for a rider below the listed minimum.
Little dirt bikes for young riders. The Hiboy DK2 lists ages 3–7, a 150 lb weight limit, 12 in wheels and three parent-set speed modes of 5, 8 and 13 mph. The Hiboy DK1 lists ages 3–10, a 140 lb limit and three modes of 5, 7.5 and 15.5 mph.
Youth dirt bikes, 8 and up. The Razor Dirt Rocket MX400 lists 8+, 140 lb and 12 in wheels. The Hiboy DM14 lists 8–14, 18 in wheels and three modes of 8, 15 and 20 mph.
Teen bikes. The X-PRO E-Hawk lists 13+ and a 287 lb limit. The Razor Dirt Rocket MX500 lists 14+ and 175 lb, and the MX650 lists 16+ and 220 lb.
Many listings, including most MotoTec gas and electric bikes and the Razor RSF650, give no age in our data. That doesn't mean there's no age. It means the listing we read didn't state one. The maker's manual will. Read it before you order.
My tía says in her day a dirt bike was a bicycle nobody had washed. She isn't wrong about mine.
What to look at on a kids dirt bike listing
Listed age
The listed age is a floor, and on a few bikes a ceiling too. A range like 3–7 or 8–14 tells you who the maker sized the bike for. Fit the bike to the rider now. "They'll grow into it" doesn't work with a motor.
Rider weight limit
The table sorts by this. Limits in our data include 287 lb (E-Hawk), 220 lb (MX650 and RSF650), 175 lb (MX500), 150 lb (DK2) and 140 lb (DK1 and MX400). Weight is only one line of the fit. The fit check below is the rest.
Wheel size
Wheel size is a rough guide to how big the bike is. On this page, listed wheels run from 11 in on the MotoTec 49cc Mini Dirt Bike, and 12 in on the Hiboy DK2 and Razor MX400, to 16 in up front on the Razor MX500 and MX650 and 18 in on the Hiboy DM14. A bigger wheel usually means a taller seat. Check the seat against the rider, not the wheel against the photo.
Parent-set speed modes
This is where I'd spend my reading time. Here's my one opinion on this page: for a first dirt bike, a speed mode a parent sets is worth more than any top speed on the box. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's guide gives the reason. It says young riders tend to use the throttle like an on/off switch, and need practice to use it smoothly.
Listings that name modes include the Hiboy DK2 (5, 8 and 13 mph, parent-set), the Hiboy DK1 (5, 7.5 and 15.5 mph), the Hiboy DM14 (8, 15 and 20 mph) and the MotoTec Demon 36V 500W (parent-selectable speeds). Follow the maker's manual for setting them. Start on the lowest and stay there until the rider stops cleanly every time.
Listed top speed
A listed top speed is a fact about the bike. It isn't a goal. On this page they run from 13 mph on the DK2 to 42 mph on the E-Hawk, which lists 13+. Read it next to the age, never alone.
Engine size, transmission and starter
For gas bikes, the cc number is the engine size. Two listings here name an automatic: the MotoTec Hooligan 72cc, with an automatic centrifugal clutch and electric start, and the MotoTec 49cc Mini Dirt Bike. An automatic dirt bike for kids has no clutch lever to learn. The MotoTec DB-01 and DB-02 list pull start. Fewer controls make for an easier first lesson.
Brakes
The Razor MX500 and MX650 list hand-operated dual disc brakes. The Hiboy DK2 lists a rear drum plus an electronic brake, the Razor MX400 a hand-operated rear brake, and the MotoTec Demon 36V 500W front and rear brakes. The E-Hawk lists a disc. Many listings don't name a brake in our data, so read the manual. The MSF guide says a rider should be able to use the brakes while seated without looking down.
Battery and run time
Listed run times include up to 30 minutes at high speed on the MX400, up to 40 minutes on the MX500 and MX650, up to 50 minutes on the RSF650, and up to 90 minutes on the Hiboy DK1. The DK1 listing adds that its figure comes from the maker's test with an 88.2 lb rider at 9.3 mph. That's the honest way to print a run time. Your rider and your ground will change it.
The fit check, before anything else
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's guide for parents lays out what fit means. In plain words, with the engine off and full gear on:
- Sit on the seat with both feet touching the ground. The rider should be big enough to hold the bike up.
- Turn the bars all the way left and right without stretching.
- Reach every control while holding the grips: throttle, brake levers and, on a gas bike, any foot brake or shifter.
- Use the brakes without looking down.
- Slide forward and back on the seat and still reach everything.
If any answer is no, the guide says the rider isn't physically ready for that bike. The owner's manual may show adjustments for some controls.
Theo's take, the math teacher's version: "An age range on a box works like the range on a quiz. The low number is the one you can't argue with."
The MSF guide looks past size, too. It suggests a rider show good balance and coordination, like riding a bicycle well, and follow rules set by parents. It notes the MSF DirtBike School takes riders as young as 6. The American Motorcyclist Association's riding-with-kids page uses the same MSF checklist and calls the parent teacher, coach and safety supervisor. That's the job that comes with the bike.

Gear for kids' dirt bikes
Riders need a properly fitted helmet made for motorized riding, plus gloves, boots, eye protection and long sleeves and pants. Follow the maker's age, height and weight limits, and keep an adult watching every ride.
The MSF guide is blunt: a helmet, eye protection, gloves, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt or jacket and over-the-ankle boots, every ride, in any weather. Anything less isn't adequate. It says never let anyone ride without a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet, fitted snug and fastened.
The CPSC helmet chart lists a motocross or motorcycle helmet for dirt- and mini-bike riding, with the standards to look for on the label inside. The CPSC warns that novelty and toy helmets aren't made to any standard. Bring the rider along so the helmet can be fitted, and replace it after a hard impact, even if it looks fine.
The MSF also says to wear the gear every time the rider sits on the bike, even for practice with the engine off. That's how the habit sticks.
Fuel, charging and storage
For gas bikes: refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool, and store fuel in an approved container away from the house. Never run an engine in a garage or any closed space. The CPSC's fuel page adds: keep cans in a cool, ventilated spot, never in the house, cap on, out of children's reach.
For electric bikes: charge with the charger that came with it, on a hard surface, and follow the maker's charging instructions. The CPSC's advice for battery-powered rides is to stay nearby while charging, not to charge overnight, to use only the maker's charger and approved batteries, and never to throw a lithium battery in the trash.
Where a kids dirt bike can ride
Rules for riding mini bikes, pit bikes and go karts vary by state and town. Check yours, and ride only where it's allowed.
The MSF guide asks parents to find out the state and local off-highway rules, and to keep close watch on every ride, even after a rider has the skills. Young riders tire and get careless, it says, and don't always see everything around them. Start in a flat, open practice area with no traffic, no obstacles and no other riders.
Who should skip a kids dirt bike for now
Skip this page if the rider is under 3. Nothing here is listed for them. Skip any bike without a stated age until you've read it in the maker's manual. Skip it if the rider can't pass the fit check on the bike you're looking at, or can't yet ride a bicycle well. A mini bike or a pit bike has its own fit rules, too.
And skip it if the helmet and gear aren't in the budget yet. The gear isn't an add-on. It's part of the bike. Come back when both fit.
Measure the rider, then the bike.

Questions people ask
What age is a kids dirt bike for?
Follow the age the maker lists. On this page, listed ages include 3–7 (Hiboy DK2), 3–10 (Hiboy DK1), 8+ (Razor Dirt Rocket MX400), 8–14 (Hiboy DM14), 13+ (X-PRO E-Hawk), 14+ (Razor MX500) and 16+ (Razor MX650). Many listings give no age in our data, so read the manual first. Never buy below the listed minimum.
Is there a dirt bike with training wheels?
Our data doesn't record training wheels on any bike on this page, so check each listing's photos and bullets. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's readiness guide says a rider should be big enough to hold the bike up with both feet touching the ground, and well coordinated, for example able to ride a bicycle. A rider who still needs training wheels on a bicycle may not be ready.
What is an automatic dirt bike for kids?
An automatic dirt bike has no clutch lever or gear pedal; it moves as the engine speeds up. On this page, the MotoTec Hooligan 72cc lists an automatic centrifugal clutch and electric start, and the MotoTec 49cc Mini Dirt Bike lists automatic. Electric dirt bikes have no gears to shift at all, just a throttle and brakes.
How much is a kids dirt bike?
We don't print prices; the Check price button shows today's number. Bikes on this page sit across several of our price tiers, from the lower ones to the top. What drives the difference, from the listings, is size: battery voltage and motor watts on electric bikes, engine cc on gas ones. Budget for the helmet and gear at the same time.
What is a mini dirt bike?
Mini dirt bike is the everyday name for the smallest dirt bikes, the ones with small wheels and a low seat. On this page, wheel sizes start at 11 in on the MotoTec 49cc Mini Dirt Bike and 12 in on the Hiboy DK2 and Razor MX400. Pick by the listed age and weight limit and the fit check, not by the name.
