Go Karts for Kids, Teens and Families
A go kart is a small four-wheel ride-on with a seat, a steering wheel and either a gas engine or a battery. The ones we track on Amazon US run from electric karts listed for ages 4+ to gas two-seaters listed for 13+. Start with your rider's age and weight, then read the listing. The question I hear most at work isn't about engines. It's whether the box fits in the truck. Measure the truck bed too.

What’s in this listEvery gas and electric go kart we track on Amazon US, highest stated rider weight limit first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
What a go kart is
A go kart is a small motorized vehicle with four wheels, a low seat and a steering wheel, made for riding off the road. The driver steers with the wheel and works the throttle and brake with foot pedals or hand levers, depending on the model. The CPSC's report on go-kart injuries to children describes the typical kart as a steel-tube frame big enough for one or two riders, used around homes, in fields and in open areas.
That report treats go karts as gas-powered. Today plenty of them run on batteries, and this page covers both. The table sorts every gas and electric go kart we track on Amazon US by the rider weight limit stated on its listing, highest first. Karts without a stated limit sit lower. It's a sort, not a ranking.
At our last check in October 2026, the karts came from four makers: Trailmaster, X-PRO, MotoTec and Razor. That's how the data landed. None of us on the loop has driven these karts. What follows is what the listings say, and where the data is thin, I say that too.
Gas go karts and electric go karts
A gas powered go kart has a small engine, a fuel tank and an exhaust. On this page, listed engines run from 52 cc to 212 cc. The gas karts are mostly the bigger ones: two-seaters, roll cages, suspension, reverse.
An electric go kart has a battery and a motor, and you charge it from the wall. On this page, most electric karts are the smaller ones for younger riders, plus a few bigger 48 V and 60 V karts. The electric go karts page covers them in detail.
Here's the table version:
- Gas: fuel to store, exhaust, engine runs outdoors only, no charge wait
- Electric: no fuel, no exhaust, a charger and a charge time
- Both: the same helmet, gear, riding area and adult watching
Charge an electric kart with the charger that came with it, on a hard surface, and follow the maker's charging instructions. The CPSC's advice for battery-powered rides adds two habits worth keeping: stay nearby while it charges, and don't charge overnight.
Go karts for kids, youth go karts and karts for teens
By listed age, the karts on this page fall into four groups. Never buy for a rider below the listed minimum.
Young kids, 4+ to 6+. The Razor Crazy Cart Shuffle lists 4+, the youngest here, and that's the only fact our data has for it. The Crazy Cart Shift, Ground Force Rad Rod and one Crazy Cart Shift Lightshow listing are 6+.
Kids, 8+ and 9+. The Razor Dune Buggy, Ground Force One, Ground Force Dune Runner and PowerRider 360 list 8+. The Crazy Cart Sport and DLX list 9+.
Youth go karts with an age range. A few listings give a top age as well as a bottom one. The Trailmaster Cheetah 6 lists 6–12, a 163 cc engine, a 4-point safety belt and a remote kill. The X-PRO 125cc Off-Road Go Kart lists 7–16. The Trailmaster Mid XRS lists 10–14. The Mid XRX, Mid XRX/R and Blazer 200R list 10+.
Teens and adults. The X-PRO Ranger 125 lists 13+, 2 seats and a 350 lb weight limit. The Razor Crazy Cart XL lists 16+ and 240 lb.
Several karts have no age at all in our data, including the X-PRO Rover 125 and Ranger 150, the MotoTec karts and the Trailmaster Mini XRX/R+, Mini XRS+ and Cheetah 8. For those, the maker's manual has the age. Read it before you order.
My one opinion on this page: a listed age and a listed weight limit are the two specs I won't buy a kart without. The reason is in the CPSC report. It notes that the voluntary fun-kart standards recommend riders be at least 8 unless the maker says otherwise, and that riders meet the physical and mental limits the maker sets. If the maker's numbers aren't in front of you, you can't check either one.
What to look at on a go kart listing
Rider weight limit
The table sorts by this. Our data gives 350 lb for the X-PRO Rover 125 and the three Ranger 125 listings, 330 lb for an E-Ranger and an E-Rover, 240 lb for the Crazy Cart XL, 140 lb for the Crazy Cart Sport and DLX, and 120 lb for the Dune Buggy. On a two-seater, read whether the limit is per seat or for both riders together. The manual will say.
Marisol's take, before anybody on the loop shops for anything with wheels: "Write the rider's weight down before you shop. Then you're comparing numbers, not hopes."
Engine size and engine type
Engine size is given in cc (cubic centimeters). On this page the gas karts list 52 cc (MotoTec Sandman), 98 cc (MotoTec Mud Monster), 125 cc (X-PRO), 163 cc (Cheetah 6), 196 cc (Mid XRX/R), 208 cc (Cheetah 8) and 212 cc (several Trailmaster and MotoTec karts).
Some listings name the engine type. A 2-stroke mixes oil into the fuel; a 4-stroke keeps the oil separate. The Sandman lists a 2-stroke. The X-PRO Rover 125, Ranger 125 and 125cc Off-Road, the Mud XL 212cc and the Mid XRS list 4-strokes. A bigger cc number is a fact about the engine. It isn't a measure of fit.
Transmission
Three kinds show up here:
- Automatic, centrifugal clutch: no clutch lever; the kart moves as the engine speeds up (Sandman, Mini XRX/R+, Mini XRS+)
- Semi-automatic: gears without a clutch lever (the X-PRO 125s, Rover 125, Ranger 125 and 150)
- Torque converter / CVT: listed on the Trailmaster Cheetah 8
For a first rider, the fewer controls to learn, the better. Read how each one shifts in the manual before the first ride.
Go kart with reverse
Reverse is listed on the X-PRO Rover 125, Ranger 125, Ranger 150 and both X-PRO 125cc karts, and on the Trailmaster Mini XRX/R+, Mid XRX/R and Blazer 200R. Our data doesn't say either way for the others.
Reverse earns its keep at the end of a ride, backing out of a tight spot. Without it, every three-point turn is a push. My back has opinions about that.
Starter
Listings name three kinds: electric start (a button or key), pull start (a cord) and both. The Rover 125, Ranger 125, Mid XRX/R, Mid XRX, Blazer 200R, Cheetah 8 and X-PRO 125cc Off-Road list electric start. The Sandman and Mid XRS list pull start. The Mini XRX/R+ lists electric plus pull.
Brakes
The X-PRO Rover 125 and Ranger 125 list front and rear hydraulic disc brakes. The Trailmaster Mid XRX/R, Mid XRX and Mid XRS list disc brakes, and the Sandman a rear disc. Among the electric karts, the Dune Buggy and Dune Runner list hand-operated rear discs, and the PowerRider 360 a front band brake. Whatever the kind, practice the stop first, until it's the same every time.
Belts, harnesses and roll cages
Restraints listed on this page include individual harness belts (Rover 125), a five-point seatbelt (Mini XRX/R+), a safety harness and full roll cage (Mid XRX/R, Mid XRX), a 4-point safety belt and remote kill (Cheetah 6), 3-point retractable seat belts (Cheetah 8), and a 4-point harness and padded roll cage (E-Rover). A belt only works fastened and adjusted to the rider. Fit it at home.
Seats, suspension and wheels
Two seats are listed on the Ranger 125, MotoTec Mud XL 212cc, Trailmaster Mid XRX/R, Mid XRX and Mini XRS+, and the E-Rover. Suspension is listed on the Ranger 125 (four-wheel spring), the Mud Monster, Mud XL 212cc and Mini XRS+ (full), the Mid XRS (rear swingarm with mono shocks) and the Sandman (rear). Wheel sizes run from 9.5 in on the Sandman to 19 in up front on the Rover 125.
The CPSC report found that bumps, ruts and holes were a major factor in karts tipping over. Suspension doesn't change that. Pick ground that's flat. For rougher ground, the off-road go karts page covers what to check.
Emissions notes
Some listings carry an emissions line. The X-PRO Ranger 125 and Ranger 150 listings say they can't be sold to California. A Trailmaster Mid XRX/R listing and a Blazer 200R listing say they're not CA CARB-compliant. If you live in California, read that line before you read anything else.

Go karting for kids at a track
Plenty of people searching "go karting for kids" mean a track, not a purchase. A karting track sets its own age, height and helmet rules, and staff run the session. If you're testing whether your kid likes karting, a track is a fair first step. At a track, someone else owns the karts, the fence and the rulebook. At home, all three are yours.
Fuel, exhaust and storage
Refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool, and store fuel in an approved container away from the house. Never run an engine in a garage or any closed space.
The CPSC's fuel safety page adds the details. Store gas cans in a cool, well-ventilated spot, never in the house or a basement or near anything that can spark, like a pilot light. Put the cap back on every time. Keep fuel out of children's reach.
One more listing line worth reading before delivery: the Blazer 200R is listed as shipping mostly assembled. Most of the others don't say, so plan for an afternoon with the manual and a socket set.
My tía's green chile comes every September. It's the only box I've ever been asked to clear Bay Three for, ahead of any kart. She calls that a priority list.
Where a go kart can ride
The CPSC report on go-kart injuries to children found the main hazards were hitting a fixed object or a moving vehicle, tipping over, and falls. Most of the injuries it looked at happened close to home, on driveways, yards, fields and private tracks. Falls happened mostly to passengers, and most of those passengers were 2 or 3 years old, in karts with two or more riders.
So:
- Pick flat ground, away from the street, parked cars, trees and fences
- One rider per seat, each belted, each in a helmet
- No small passengers riding along on a lap or a frame
- Keep other kids and pets out of the riding area
The same report lists hair and loose clothing caught in exposed chains, belts or axles among go-kart hazards. Tie long hair back and tuck in loose clothes.
Safety, plainly
Riders need a properly fitted helmet made for motorized riding, plus gloves, boots, eye protection and long sleeves and pants. Follow the maker's age, height and weight limits, and keep an adult watching every ride.
The CPSC helmet chart lists a karting or motorcycle helmet for go-karting, and names the standards to look for on its label. The CPSC also warns that novelty and toy helmets aren't made to any standard. Bring the rider along when you buy, so the fit can be checked. Replace a helmet after a hard impact, even if it looks fine.
Rules for riding mini bikes, pit bikes and go karts vary by state and town. Check yours, and ride only where it's allowed.
Who should skip a go kart for now
Skip this page if the rider is under 4. Nothing here is listed for them, and most karts here start at 6 or older. Skip any kart without a stated age until you've read the age in the maker's manual.
Skip a gas kart if you don't have a safe outdoor spot to store fuel, or the flat, open ground to ride on. Skip any kart if the helmet and gear aren't in the budget yet. And if your kid hasn't learned to steer and stop a bike or a pedal car with confidence, a motor can wait. That's a fine answer for this year.
Write the weight down. Then shop.

Questions people ask
How old do you have to be to drive a go kart?
It depends on the kart. Follow the age the maker lists. On this page, listed starting ages run from 4+ to 16+. A CPSC report notes the voluntary fun-kart standards recommend riders be at least 8 unless the maker says otherwise, and meet the maker's physical limits. Karting tracks set their own rules, so ask the track.
How much is a go kart?
We don't print prices; the Check price button shows today's number. Go karts on this page sit in a wide spread of our price tiers, from the lower ones to the highest. Small electric karts sit in the lower tiers, gas two-seaters with roll cages near the top. The best cheap go karts page lists the karts from our lower tiers, each with a listed age.
What should I look for in a gas powered go kart?
Read five lines first: listed age, rider weight limit, transmission, brakes and the belt or harness. Then engine size in cc, whether it has reverse, how it starts and whether it's a two-seater. Check the listing for an emissions note too; some on this page say they can't be sold to California or aren't CARB-compliant.
Is there a go kart with reverse?
Yes. On this page, reverse is listed on the X-PRO Rover 125, Ranger 125, Ranger 150 and both 125cc karts, and on the Trailmaster Mini XRX/R+, Mid XRX/R and Blazer 200R. Reverse helps most when backing out of a tight spot. Check the listing for the other karts; our data doesn't say either way.
What is a good youth go kart?
One whose listed age range and limits fit your rider now. On this page, the Trailmaster Cheetah 6 lists ages 6–12, the X-PRO 125cc Off-Road Go Kart lists 7–16, the Trailmaster Mid XRS lists 10–14, and the Mid XRX, Mid XRX/R and Blazer 200R list 10+. Read the maker's height and weight limits before you buy.
