Trivial Pursuit Board Game: Rules, Wedges and Editions

The Trivial Pursuit board game is a trivia race for 2 or more players: roll, move around a wheel-shaped board, answer questions in six categories and fill your mover with six colored wedges, then win on a final question in the center. The Family Edition box says ages 8+; most other editions on Amazon US start at 12+ to 17+. It's the only game I know where the other players happily help you pick your last question. They just don't pick the easy one.

What’s in this listEditions and versions of Trivial Pursuit sold on Amazon US, matched by the name on the listing. Players, age and play time come from the box or listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What the Trivial Pursuit board game is

Trivial Pursuit is a trivia game on a board. The board is a wheel: an outer ring, six spokes, and a hub in the center. Every space has a color, and every color is a category. Land on a space and someone reads you a question in that color.

The goal is to fill your round mover with six wedges, one of each color. You earn a wedge by answering right on a wedge space. With all six in hand, you head back to the hub and answer one last question to win.

In the Family Edition rule sheet from Hasbro, the six categories are:

The rule sheet also warns that categories are broad, so a cooking question might turn up in Sports & Leisure. I appreciate a rulebook that settles an argument before the box is open.

Box facts, from the listings for the main Hasbro editions:

How Trivial Pursuit plays

I'm describing Hasbro's rule sheet for Trivial Pursuit Family Edition, item E1924, the 2017 printing. It's the only Trivial Pursuit rule sheet I could open in full on Hasbro's instructions site. The rest is my own wording.

Setup

Everyone picks a mover and places it in the center hub. The kids' yellow cards and adults' blue cards go in their own holders. Each player decides which deck they'll answer from, and the decks never get mixed. Then decide who starts. That's it.

A turn

  1. Roll the die.
  2. Move that many spaces in one direction, around the ring or along a spoke. You can't double back in the same move. The hub counts as one space if you pass through it.
  3. Do what the space says.

If you land on a wedge space, the player on your left draws a card from the deck you chose and reads the question in that space's color. Get it right and you take the wedge. Your turn ends there. If you already own that color, you roll again instead. Miss it and your turn is over.

Two more spaces matter. A Roll Again space does exactly that. A Showdown space lets you pick another player and a category you still need. You both answer a question from that category. If you're right, you win the wedge. If they also need it and they're right, they win it too. If they already own that wedge and miss, they lose it. Showdown is the one moment in the game where a wedge can leave your mover.

Land exactly on the hub and you choose the category for your question.

How you win

With six wedges, head for the hub. You have to land on it by exact count. While you work your way there, keep answering questions. You won't get wedges, but a right answer gets you another roll.

On the hub, the other players pick the category of your final question. Answer right and you win. Miss and you leave the hub on your next turn and try to come back. If your sixth wedge is won while you're sitting on the hub, the sheet says you have to step off and come back for the final question.

Lucho's take on the final question: "Everyone gets one question picked by the table. That's not trivia. That's an inspection." He wasn't wrong. The table knows your weakest color by then.

Mix-ups the rule sheet settles

A few points that start arguments, all from the E1924 sheet:

Teams and the rule sheet's own flexibility

The E1924 sheet is unusually relaxed. It allows teams that share one mover, with kids and adults on the same side or on opposite sides. And it tells families to agree on their own way to play: switch decks turn by turn, set a time limit, decide how exact an answer must be, or give younger players hints. That's Hasbro's suggestion, not a house rule of mine, which I find refreshing.

Trivial Pursuit editions on Amazon US

The product table on this page lists every Trivial Pursuit listing we track. Here's how they group, using only what each listing states.

Family editions

These are the only three editions in our data with an 8+ label. The two Family listings differ by question count. If you want the Showdown rule from the sheet above, look for the listing with over 1,400 questions.

Big adult editions

Decades

A decade edition is a good gift for someone who was a teenager in that decade. It's a rough gift for someone who wasn't born yet.

Themed editions

These are listed by their line names. The listings give few details beyond question counts and ages.

A note on the SNL edition: it's a DVD game, and the listing flags that a device is required. Check that you own something that plays it before you wrap it.

A spin-off with its own rules

Drop Trivia (Hasbro) is in our Trivial Pursuit data because it shares the family. Hasbro's instruction page calls it a game from the makers of Trivial Pursuit, not a Trivial Pursuit edition. The listing says 13+, 2 or more players, 15 minutes, electronic. Hasbro's page lists a tower, 6 pucks and 60 double-sided cards, played over 4 rounds. If you want wedges and a wheel, this isn't that game.

Pick the edition by the youngest player's age

My one opinion for this page: the age on the box works in both directions. A Family Edition at 8+ has a kids' deck because a third-grader and a grandparent can't fairly answer the same card. Put a 10-year-old in front of a 16+ Master Edition and they'll sit out most of the game. Go the other way, and a table of adults will burn through a family deck in a few nights.

So start with the youngest person who'll play:

The horror editions say 17+ and one is marked adults only. They belong on the grown-up shelf.

Who should skip Trivial Pursuit

Skip it if your table hates waiting. When it isn't your turn, you mostly listen to someone else's question. Teams fix some of that.

Skip it if one person at your table always knows the answer and the others have stopped trying. Teams with that person split up can help, but the gap shows on every card.

Skip it if you want a quick game. Only one main edition lists a time, 45 minutes, and the exact-count rule at the hub can stretch the end. For short sessions, look at Drop Trivia at 15 minutes or the wider trivia games shelf.

Check the age label on the listing. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3, and the wedges are small.

If you like Trivial Pursuit, look at these

Pages chosen by what they share with Trivial Pursuit in our data: question cards, teams, and tables of 2 to 6.

Most editions here are Hasbro's, and two older ones carry Milton Bradley's name on the listing. See the Hasbro and Milton Bradley brand pages for more of each lineup.

Fill the mover, aim for the hub, and know your weakest color before the table does.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Trivial Pursuit and the Family Edition?

The Family Edition has two decks: yellow cards for kids and blue cards for adults. Hasbro's E1924 rule sheet lets each player pick which deck they answer from, so a child and a grown-up can play the same game fairly. The listings in our data put the Family Edition at 8+, while most other editions list 12+ to 17+.

What is Trivial Pursuit Master Edition?

It's listed by Hasbro as Trivial Pursuit Master Edition, ages 16+, 2 to 6 players, with 2,950 questions. The listing also marks it as electronic. That's the most questions of any edition in our data, and the 16+ label says the questions are pitched at adults.

Is there a Trivial Pursuit for the 80s or 2000s?

The Trivial Pursuit Mini Packs Multipack in our data lists four decade packs: 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s, ages 16+. There's also a Decades 2010 to 2020 edition with 1,800 questions on 300 cards, and an older 90's Edition from Milton Bradley with more than 2,400 questions.

Is there a Disney Trivial Pursuit?

There's no Disney Trivial Pursuit edition among the listings we track on Amazon US right now, so we can't point you to one. The themed editions currently in our data are the Star Wars The Black Series Edition, the Wizarding World Harry Potter Edition Compact, Friends, Gilmore Girls, SNL and two horror movie editions.

How many players can play Trivial Pursuit?

Most listings say 2 or more. Hasbro's Family Edition rule sheet prints 2 to 6 players and allows teams that share one mover. The Master Edition and Decades 2010 to 2020 list 2 to 6, the 90's Edition lists 2 to 4, and Trivial Pursuit 2026 lists 1 to 6. Teams are the easy way to seat a bigger group.
