Cranium Game: Rules in Brief and the Editions

The Cranium game is a team party game where every card asks for a different skill: sculpting clay, drawing, acting, spelling, trivia. Hasbro's classic rulebook says 4 or more players in teams, and you race around the board to Cranium Central. Nine Cranium listings are on Amazon US in our data, from a co-op detective game at 5+ to the 25th Anniversary Edition and Cranium Classic at 12+. The age label is the first thing to read. The clay is the second.

What’s in this listEditions and versions of Cranium sold on Amazon US, matched by the name on the listing. Players, age and play time come from the box or listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What the Cranium game is

Cranium is a party board game played in teams. Its trick is that no single skill wins it. One card asks your team to sculpt something out of clay. The next asks you to spell a word backwards, hum a tune, act something out or answer a trivia question. Hasbro's page says the game was introduced in 1998.

The rulebook calls the four kinds of cards by four characters:

Every team has someone who's good at one of these and terrible at another. That's the design. The person who can't act may be the one who knows the trivia, and the quiet kid may turn out to be the one who reads a clay blob correctly.

Here are the box facts for the editions in our data that state them:

How Cranium plays

These notes come from Hasbro's rulebook for Cranium, product 16577, the edition with the folding board. They're in our own words. The full rulebook is linked in the sources.

Getting ready

  1. Split into two teams of two or more players. A big group can make up to four teams, as long as each has at least two players.
  2. Each team picks a mover and puts it on the purple Start space.
  3. Set out the four card boxes, the die, the timer and the tub of Cranium Clay.
  4. Give each team a notepad and a pencil. The rulebook notes they aren't included, so find a pencil before you start.
  5. Fold the board to the length you want: quick, mid-sized or full-sized.

The team with the player whose birthday comes up next goes first. That's the only time in my life a birthday has helped me at a game table.

A turn

The order of a Cranium turn surprises people. You don't roll first. You roll at the end, and only if you succeed.

  1. The color of the space your mover is on decides which card box your next card comes from. On your first turn, and any time you're on a purple space or a Planet Cranium space, your team picks the box.
  2. The team on your right draws your card and reads it to you.
  3. When you're ready, they start the timer. Your team has to finish the activity before time runs out.
  4. If you succeed, roll the die and move to the next space of the color the die shows. If you fail, your turn is over and you try again next turn.

In the mid-sized and full-sized games, you must stop at every Planet Cranium space, even if your roll would take you past it.

All-play cards

Some cards are all-play cards. When one comes up, every team competes at once, and the first team to shout the right answer before time runs out gets a bonus roll. Then the team whose turn it was takes its regular turn. The rulebook calls an all-play card a pause in the regular game, and that's how it feels: the whole room leans in for one card.

The fast track

In the full-sized game, each Planet Cranium gives you a shot at a shortcut. If your team succeeds at its first activity on a Planet Cranium, you move onto the inner fast track. If not, you take the scenic route around the outside. On the fast track, rolling purple sends you straight to the next Planet Cranium.

How you win

When you reach Cranium Central, the other teams choose which card box your final activity comes from. They will not choose kindly. If your team completes it, you win. If you fail, you try again on your next turn. All-play cards count here too.

The clay

Cranium Clay is part of the game, and the rulebook notes it contains wheat. If anyone at your table has a wheat allergy, plan around it. If clay gets spilled, the rulebook says to let it dry and then scrape or vacuum it up, and to always put it back in its container after play.

Editions of Cranium on Amazon US

As of 2026-10-23, our data shows nine Cranium listings on Amazon US, from three makers: Hasbro, Funko and Goliath. The table on this page has all nine. Here's what tells them apart, from the listings and the rulebooks we opened.

The classic board game

Four listings are the core party game: Cranium and Cranium with Bonus Pack from Hasbro, Cranium Classic from Goliath, and Cranium Outrageous Fun For Everyone from Hasbro. The Goliath listing states 4+ players and ages 12+. The three Hasbro listings in our data don't state players, age or time, so the Hasbro rulebook facts above are the best guide for them.

Hasbro's product page for this edition says it added 600 question cards and a folding board you set for a short game, a medium game or a long one. If you're buying for a group that has played before, that folding board is the useful part. Nobody has to commit to the full 90 minutes on a school night.

Cranium Family Edition

This is the version for kids and adults together. Hasbro's rulebook for it, product 16513, says ages 8 to adult. You play in two teams and race to cross the finish line, and Hasbro's page says it has 14 activities, including 7 family challenges. The rulebook lists Cranium Cubes and a Lucky Star space: if you start your turn on a Lucky Star and succeed, you move twice the number you rolled.

My one opinion for this page: the age on the box works in both directions. Cranium Classic says 12+ because it expects trivia and word puzzles a 9-year-old won't have met yet. The Family Edition says 8 to adult for the opposite reason. Put a mixed table of kids and grown-ups in front of the 12+ box and the kids sit out half the cards. Put a table of adults in front of a 5+ box and they're done before the snacks are.

Cranium Big Brain Detective

From Funko, and a different kind of Cranium. The listing says cooperative, 1 to 4 players, ages 5+, with a solo mode. Co-op means everyone wins or loses together against the game. This is the only Cranium listing in our data that starts under 8, and the only one that doesn't play in competing teams.

Cranium 25th Anniversary Edition

Also from Funko. The listing says 4+ players, ages 12+, 45 minutes, and 800 questions across 18 activities. If you want a Cranium with a play time printed on the listing, this is the one.

Cranium Dark

The adult edition from Hasbro, product B7402. It plays differently from the board game. Its game guide says each turn you draw an Action card and show it to everyone, then draw a Cranium card and keep it secret. You have 60 seconds to get the others to guess your secret card, acting it out in the style the Action card asks for. The player who guesses keeps the Cranium card and you keep the Action card, and the first player to collect seven cards wins. There's a team variant for 4 or more where the first team to ten cards wins.

The box lists 340 Cranium cards, 60 Action cards, 2 pads of paper, clay and a timer. It's marked as an adult game on the cover.

Cranium Wow

A Hasbro listing in our data that doesn't state players, age or contents. Check the listing photos for what's in the box before you buy.

Who Cranium suits

Cranium fits groups where people are good at different things and like showing it. A family where one kid draws, one reads everything and one never stops performing is the table this game was built for.

It also suits groups that get restless with a game that does one thing for an hour. Every few minutes the kind of challenge changes.

June, who is 11, can spell almost any word backwards faster than I can spell it forwards. On a Word Worm card, I know whose turn it should be.

Marisol's take: "I'll do the trivia. I'll even do the humming. But a sculpture with a timer running is a tolerance I can't hold."

Who should skip Cranium

Skip it if your group is two or three people and you want the board game. The classic rulebook and the Classic and 25th Anniversary listings start at 4. Cranium Dark lists 3 or more but is an adult game. Big Brain Detective is the one that plays small.

Skip it if anyone at the table really hates performing. Acting and humming are part of the deck, and passing on them means passing on a quarter of the game.

Skip the 12+ editions for a table of young kids, and the adult editions for any table with kids at all. Check the age on the listing before the name on the box.

Questions people ask

How many players do you need for Cranium?

Hasbro's classic rulebook says 4 or more, split into teams of two or more, with up to four teams. The 25th Anniversary Edition and Cranium Classic listings both start at 4 players. Cranium Dark's rulebook says 3 or more. Cranium Big Brain Detective is the outlier: its listing says 1 to 4 players and a solo mode.

How long does a game of Cranium take?

In the classic Hasbro edition, you fold the board to choose. The rulebook calls it a best guess: about 30 minutes for the quick board, 60 for the mid-sized and 90 for the full-sized game. The 25th Anniversary Edition lists 45 minutes. Other listings in our data don't state a time.

What age is Cranium for?

It depends on the edition. Cranium Classic and the 25th Anniversary Edition list 12+. Hasbro's Family Edition rulebook says ages 8 to adult. Cranium Big Brain Detective lists 5+. Cranium Dark's rulebook marks it as an adult game. Several older Hasbro listings in our data don't state an age, so check the box photos.

What are the four Cranium categories?

The classic rulebook names four card boxes, one per character: Creative Cat, Word Worm, Star Performer and Data Head. In play, that covers drawing and sculpting, word puzzles like spelling backwards, acting and performing, and trivia. The color of the space your mover lands on decides which box your next card comes from.

Is Cranium Classic the same as the original Cranium?

The Cranium Classic listing in our data comes from Goliath and lists ages 12+ and 4+ players. We read Hasbro's rulebook for its Cranium edition, not the Goliath box, so we can't confirm card-for-card that the two match. Compare the contents list in the listing photos if you want the version you remember.
