MPC Models: Model Car Kits and the Rest of the Lineup

MPC models are mostly 1/25 American car kits: muscle cars, pickups, drag cars, customs and cars that come with a trailer, plus a few sci-fi ships. Most MPC kits in our data that state a skill level say level 2, and piece counts run from 91 to 154. Pick the car first, then read the piece count, not just the level. (Read a column of MPC titles out loud and you've recited a 1970s parking lot.)

What MPC makes

MPC makes plastic model kits, and on Amazon US the lineup is mostly American cars and trucks at 1/25. Scale tells you how much smaller the model is than the real thing. At 1/25, one inch on the model stands for 25 inches on the real car.

MPC is one of the brands of Round 2, LLC, of South Bend, Indiana. Round 2's site lists AMT, MPC and Polar Lights among its brands, and its Polar Lights page says Round 2 acquired Polar Lights in 2008 along with AMT and MPC. Round 2's MPC product page shows car and truck kits next to Space: 1999 and other sci-fi subjects, which matches what's in the grid above.

Our data holds full details for 40 MPC kits:

Ages, where listed, are 10+ or 14+. Nine listings say 10+ and nine say 14+.

How MPC model kits compare by skill level and piece count

Every MPC kit in our data that states a skill level says level 2. A low number means the maker rates the kit on the simpler side. Our data doesn't include MPC's own chart, so read it as a relative number, not a promise.

But level 2 covers a wide range. Here are the stated piece counts:

Here is my one opinion for this page. On an MPC kit, read the piece count before you trust the skill level. Every kit in that list is level 2, and the Shelby Daytona has 63 more parts than the Demon. 63 parts is a lot of cutting, cleaning and gluing. If it's your first glue kit, start near the top of that list.

MPC muscle cars and classics

Two kits in the grid carry the Weekend Warrior name. That's as close as any box has come to naming this website. I checked.

Who these suit: builders who want a 1/25 American car with an engine, an interior and chrome-look trim. Who should skip: anyone who wants no glue at all. These are glue kits.

MPC pickups, vans and trucks

The van's 2-in-1 label means one box, two possible builds and one decision. Choose before the first cut, because some parts only belong to one version.

The Mack DM800 is a semi tractor at 1/25, a long model. Our data doesn't list its length, so check the box before you plan a shelf.

MPC drag cars

Five listings are tagged drag racing in our data:

The two Pro Stock Vegas are a natural pair on a shelf. Same car, same class, two different drivers' markings. At 6 in, the Bruce Larson Vega is the shortest MPC kit in our data with a stated length.

Cars with trailers

Three MPC kits include a trailer, per their titles:

A car with a trailer is two models in one box, and it needs about twice the shelf. Lucho read all three titles and said every trailer kit should come with a lesson in backing up. I told him the instructions don't cover that. He said that's why he reads the whole manual anyway.

Customs and TV cars

These are listed by the names on their boxes. A custom or TV car is a fun break from stock models, because the shape itself is the point. The Raiders Coach is the longest MPC kit in our data with a stated length, at 9 in.

MPC sci-fi kits

The line names here are exactly as the listings give them. The X-Wing Fighter is the one kit in the grid that says snap in its title, meaning the parts press together without cement. The 22-inch Eagle is a big model at 1:48. Plan the shelf before the build.

Choosing between near twins

Several MPC subjects come in pairs. The titles tell them apart, and the data adds a few facts:

When two listings look alike, compare the year, the version word and the box photo. The version word, like Weekend Warrior or Super Stocker, can mean different wheels, decals or trim, which changes what the finished car looks like. Our data doesn't list the contents of each version, so the box photo and the listing's description are your best guide.

A convertible and a hardtop of the same car are a different kind of choice. The convertible shows its interior from every angle, so the seats and dash need the same care as the body. The hardtop hides more of the inside behind glass.

How to pick an MPC kit

  1. Pick the car or ship. That part is personal.
  2. Read the age. 10+ or 14+, where stated.
  3. Read the piece count, where stated. 91 to 154 for the level 2 kits.
  4. Check paint and glue. Most listings that answer say required, not included.
  5. Check the extras. Trailer, 2-in-1, decals.

What to buy with an MPC kit

MPC next to other 1/25 makers

MPC's cars are 1/25, the same as AMT and Moebius Models car kits, and most Polar Lights cars in our data. So an MPC muscle car and a Moebius pickup line up at true relative size. For makers side by side, see model car kits. For more involved car builds, best model car kits for adults sorts them. For a smooth body color, airbrush kits covers the tools.

Safety at the bench

Hobby knives and tools: Cut away from your body on a cutting mat, and keep blades away from kids.

Cement and paint: Work with good ventilation and follow the paint or cement maker's label for masks and gloves. The EPA lists paints, solvents and hobby supplies among household sources of volatile organic compounds and advises more ventilation and following label precautions.

Respect the stated age on each box: 10+ or 14+ where listed.

Count the pieces, then pick the car. The level will agree with you more often that way.

Questions about MPC

Are MPC model kits good for beginners?

Many are labeled for it. In our data, every MPC kit that states a skill level says level 2, and ages run 10+ or 14+ where stated. But piece counts for level 2 kits run from 91 to 154, so some take much longer than others. Most that answer say paint and glue are required and not included.

Who makes MPC model kits?

MPC is one of the brands of Round 2, LLC, a company in South Bend, Indiana, that also lists AMT and Polar Lights among its brands. Round 2's own Polar Lights page says Round 2 acquired Polar Lights in 2008 along with AMT and MPC. We couldn't confirm where the kits are made, so we leave that out.

What scale are MPC model kits?

The car and truck kits in the grid above are 1/25. The sci-fi kits vary: the Space: 1999 Eagle-1 is 1/72 and the 22-inch Eagle with cargo pod is 1:48. The Star Wars kits are listed at 1:72 for the Millennium Falcon, 1:63 for the X-Wing Fighter and 1:85 for Boba Fett's Starfighter.

Do MPC kits need paint and glue?

Most do. In our data, every MPC listing that answers the question says paint and glue are required and not included, among them the 1970 Coronet Super Bee, the 1980 Ford Bronco and the Bantam Blast Dragster. The Star Wars X-Wing Fighter is a snap kit, per its title, so it doesn't need cement, though paint may still help.

What does 2-in-1 mean on an MPC kit?

It means the box has parts to build the model one of two ways. In the grid above, the 1982 Dodge Van Custom Turtle Wax kit is listed as 2-in-1. You choose one version before you start, because some parts only fit one build. Read the instructions through and mark your choice on each step.

Where can I buy MPC model kits?

The kits in the grid above are listed on Amazon US, each with a Check price button. Round 2, the company behind MPC, also shows the MPC range on its own site. Before you buy, compare the title's year and version with the box photo, since several MPC subjects come in two listings with different versions.
