Moebius Models: Model Cars, Pickups, Drag Cars and More

Moebius Models makes plastic kits of American cars and trucks at 1/25, plus a few figure and space kits, and the grid above holds 29 Moebius Models listings on Amazon US. 24 of them are 1/25 vehicles: family sedans, Ford pickups, a semi tractor, drag cars and a camping trailer. If you want a 1960s American car for a 1/25 shelf, this grid is mostly that. (Pickups, a sedan delivery and a snow plow. Somebody at Moebius has spent time in a county yard. So have I.)

What Moebius Models makes

Moebius Models makes plastic model kits. In our data, the 29 Moebius listings on Amazon US fall into four groups:

Scale tells you how much smaller the model is than the real thing. At 1/25, one inch on the model stands for 25 inches of the real car. Every Moebius car and truck kit in this grid is 1/25, so they line up on a shelf with each other and with other 1/25 kits.

Most Moebius car kits are glue kits. You cut the parts from plastic frames called runners, join them with plastic cement, paint them and add decals, the printed markings you slide on with water. Ten listings say paint and glue are required and not included. Four state ages 15+. Four state skill level 3.

Moebius model cars: the sedans and coupes

If you came looking for Moebius model cars, the grid has plenty. The road cars are mostly late-1940s to mid-1960s American subjects:

The 1965 Mopar group

Several kits share one model year and one corporate family:

Theo counted the 1965s in the grid while I was still reading titles. Nine listings carry that year. "That's not a coincidence," he said. "That's a graduating class." He then asked which one was the class president. I told him the data doesn't record that.

Who these suit: builders who want a stock family car, the kind parked in every driveway of its era. Who should skip: builders who want a pre-colored or snap kit. None of these say so.

What a 1/25 car kit asks of you

Most of these kits follow the same build pattern, and it helps to know it before the box opens.

  1. Engine and chassis first. The engine, the frame and the suspension go together early.
  2. Interior next. Seats, dashboard and door panels go into a tub.
  3. Body painted separately. The body shell gets its color coats while the rest is being built.
  4. Clear parts late. Windows go in after the paint is dry.
  5. Chrome-look parts last. Bumpers and trim are often plated on their own runner.
  6. Decals near the end, then a clear coat if the paint maker suggests one.

The body shell is where a car kit is judged. Every seam, sanding mark and dust speck shows on a big smooth panel. Primer helps you see the flaws before the color goes on, and a dust-free spot to dry the body saves a second coat.

Plated parts need a gentle hand. Cut them from the runner a little away from the part, then trim the last bit with a sharp blade. The cut spot shows bare plastic, so plan to touch it up.

Choosing between two listings with one name

The 1965 Plymouth Satellite appears twice in the grid, both labeled 1215 or 1/25. One listing states ages 15+, skill level 3 and decals included. The other states only the scale. Two listings with the same name can come from different sellers or different print runs of the box.

Check the seller line, the photos of the box and the stated contents on each. If they match, either will do. If they don't, choose by what's written, not by which photo looks nicer.

Moebius pickups and work trucks

Six Moebius listings are pickups:

A service bed and a snow plow aren't the usual subjects for a car kit. They're work trucks, with the gear that makes them work. If you like a model that tells you what the vehicle did all day, these are it.

Snow plow equipment is the one accessory nobody on Piñon Loop has needed this decade. It would still look good on the shelf.

The semi tractor

The International ProStar is listed at 1/25. A semi tractor at 1/25 is a long model. Our data doesn't list its finished length, so check the listing before you plan where it goes.

The 1953 Smoothside trailer

The 1953 Smoothside Trailer is a 1/25 camping trailer with decals, and paint and glue required. It isn't a car. It's a car's plus-one. Pair it with one of the 1950s cars in the grid and you have a small scene with a story.

Moebius drag cars

Four 1/25 listings are tagged drag racing in our data:

Drag racing class names read like field notes: B/FX, Super Stock, A990. I respect a sport that labels everything.

Our data doesn't list the contents of each kit, so read the listing's photos and parts description before you choose between the stock Coronet and the A990.

Who these suit: builders who want a race car without modern sponsor decals everywhere. Who should skip: anyone who wants the stock family car. Pick the Coronet Sedan or the Satellite instead.

Figure and space kits

Figure kits

These are figure model kits, built and painted like a car kit but shaped like a person or a character. 1/8 is a large scale for a figure, so these become display pieces. The licensed names here are as the listings give them.

A figure kit asks for different paint skills than a car. A car wants one smooth, even body color. A figure wants skin, cloth and small details, and most of it is brush work. If you've only built cars, pick the figure for the painting practice, and give it a bench session of its own.

Space kits

These don't share a shelf with the cars by scale. They share it by era of the hobby, if you like that kind of shelf. A lunar carrier at 1/48 and a 1/25 pickup on the same shelf won't look related, and that's fine. Give each its own end of the board, and let the label say what it is.

How to pick a Moebius kit

Here's the order I'd use with the grid:

  1. Choose the vehicle type. Sedan, pickup, work truck, drag car, trailer or figure.
  2. Check the skill level. Four kits state level 3. The rest don't state one.
  3. Check the age. Four state 15+.
  4. Check the paint line. Ten say paint and glue required.
  5. Check the length, where listed. The three that list one run 7.9 to 8.4 in.

My one opinion on this page: buy the paint and cement on the same day as a Moebius car kit. Ten of these listings say paint and glue are required and not included, and none of them say otherwise. A kit that arrives on Friday with no cement in the house is a kit you stare at all weekend.

By experience

By shelf

Three listings state a finished length. The 1961 Pontiac Catalina is 8.4 in. The 1964 Nova Super Sport and the 1972 F250 with snow plow are both 7.9 in. The rest don't say in our data. A row of five 1/25 cars needs about 40 inches of shelf, plus a little air between them.

Moebius next to other 1/25 makers

Moebius builds at 1/25, the same scale as MPC, AMT and Polar Lights car kits. That means a Moebius pickup and an MPC muscle car line up at true relative size. Many other makers build cars at 1/24, which is close but slightly larger. The model car kits page lists makers side by side, and best model car kits for adults sorts the more involved builds. For an even body color, airbrush kits covers the tools.

Safety at the bench

Hobby knives and tools: Cut away from your body on a cutting mat, and keep blades away from kids.

Cement and paint: Work with good ventilation and follow the paint or cement maker's label for masks and gloves. The EPA lists paints, solvents and hobby supplies among household sources of volatile organic compounds and advises more ventilation and following label precautions.

Four Moebius listings state ages 15+. Respect the label, and keep a grown-up at the bench for younger builders.

Pick the year, pick the truck, then buy the cement before you drive home.

Questions about Moebius Models

Are Moebius model kits good?

We don't grade brands. What the data shows: Moebius lists mostly 1/25 American cars and trucks, four of them at skill level 3. Four state ages 15+. Ten say paint and glue are required and not included. Three list a finished length near 8 in. Read the skill level and the paint line on each listing before you choose.

Who makes Moebius Models kits?

The kits are sold under the Moebius Models name. The company's own site lists an address in Upland, California, and doesn't say more about the company on its home page. We couldn't confirm where the kits are made, so we leave that out.

What scale are Moebius model cars?

1/25. Every car, pickup and truck kit from Moebius in the grid above states 1/25 or 1:25, including the 1953 Smoothside trailer. The figure kits are larger: The Invisible Man and the Batman TV Series Joker are 1/8, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon is 1/12. The Aries-1B lunar carrier is 1/48.

Do Moebius car kits come with paint and glue?

Not the ones that answer in our data. Ten Moebius listings say paint and glue are required and not included, including the 1964 Nova Super Sport, the 1965 Gasser and the 1972 F250 snow plow truck. The rest don't say. Plan on plastic cement and paint, plus a clear coat if the paint maker suggests one.

What are the Moebius 1965 drag cars?

Four Moebius listings are tagged drag racing in our data, all 1/25: the 1965 Gasser, the 1965 Dodge A990 Super Stock, Dave Strickler's 1965 Dodge Funny Car and the 1965 Mercury Comet B/FX. The A990 and the Funny Car state skill level 3. All four say paint and glue are required.
